Students get hands-on experience at NLC

first_imgMore than 350 grade 8-10 students in School Districts 60 and 81 gained hands-on experience in Dual Credit programming available at Northern Lights College through YES-2-IT events. YES-2-IT (Youth Exploring Skills to Industry Training) is a joint initiative of the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and the Ministry of Education. At NLC, YES-2-IT events provide students with the opportunity to learn about Dual Credit programs available on campus or through distributed delivery.  “YES-2-IT events provide the opportunity for students to experience potential education and job opportunities in a hands-on environment. The students get the chance to see the options available to them in their own backyard, and to begin envisioning what their career paths might look like,” said NLC’s recruitment manager Kristina Van De Walle.  A unique aspect of YES-2-IT is its focus on hands-on involvement, as students are encouraged to try out aspects of their selected programs through activities that are developed and overseen by participating program instructors.Dual Credit programming allows secondary school students to enrol in certain College programs, and earn credits at both levels while still in secondary school. – Advertisement –last_img read more

Calling all 2009, 2010 volunteers!

first_img1 September 2008Ordinary South Africans, as well as people with specialist skills, now have the chance to be part of the world’s most popular sporting event.South Africa’s 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) has taken applications for 5 000 local volunteers for the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup – the first step towards the recruitment and training of around 15 000 volunteers for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.Applications for 2009 Confederations Cup volunteers closed on 31 August 2008Thousands put up hands for 2009Applications for 2010 World Cup volunteers – which will also include some volunteers from the rest of Africa and the world – will open in July 2009.Volunteers ‘crucial to success of 2009, 2010’“The World Cup will call on us to step beyond our boundaries and experiences and cater to the whole world,” says LOC volunteer programme manager Onke Mjo. “Volunteers will be crucial to that process.”Mjo believes that volunteers will “make or break” the Confederations Cup and World Cup programmes.“People will remember the service and support they get in South Africa – that’s why volunteers are so crucial,” Mjo says. “People will interact with the volunteers … How they are received when they’re in the parking lot, at the stadium, at airports or hotels – that’s what will make them feel it was worth their while coming to South Africa.”For prospective volunteers, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:What kind of people is the LOC looking for?The LOC is looking for ordinary people – including students, unemployed youngsters and retired citizens – as well as specialists in various fields to work as volunteers.General volunteers will be needed in areas such as team liaison, accreditation, spectator services, fan parks, transport, information services, hospitality and logistics.Specialist volunteers will include medical practitioners, translators, people from the legal fraternity, and information technology experts. Volunteers will also be required with good technical sporting knowledge, language and media skills.According to Mjo, the most important thing the LOC will be looking for in volunteers are “people who are committed to helping us successfully host the World Cup … We’re looking for open-minded, pro-active South Africans who will always be willing to assist an individual who needs help with anything.”Is there an age requirement for volunteers?Yes. In order to be a volunteer, you must be at least 18 years old by March 2009 for the Confederations Cup, and by March 2010 for the World Cup.Will I get paid for volunteering? No. The volunteer programme is an opportunity for South Africans to participate in the World Cup by offering their time and services to the Local Organising Committee for free. You will get a travel allowance, however, as well as training, work experience, official World Cup volunteer clothing – supplied by Adidas – acknowledgement in the 2010 Fifa World Cup brochure – and an opportunity to be part of the world’s biggest single-code sporting event. What sort of training will I get?Volunteers will go through a training programme that focuses, among other things, on understanding the game of football and its culture. “Understanding the environment – including understanding Fifa and the World Cup itself – will be crucial to this World Cup,” says Mjo.“Volunteers will be trained in customer services, taught how to deal with irate spectators, and also to understand the behaviour of fans from different places around the world.”Volunteers will also be given venue- and job-specific training.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publicationor on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Brand South Africa welcomes the news that the country is no longer in recession and is anticipating a decrease in the fuel price ahead of the December holiday season

first_imgJohannesburg, Thursday 06 December 2018 –  As the country is on a path towards economic revival and seeing investor and business confidence improving significantly. Brand South Africa welcomes the news that the country is no longer in recession and is anticipating a decrease in the fuel price ahead of the December holiday season.Statistics South Africa this week released the third quarter of Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures, which reflected a growth of 2.2%. This means that the country’s second recession has ended. The main driver of positive growth in the third quarter is notably the manufacturing industry. The industry grew by 7,5%2, largely as a result of increased production of basic iron and steel, metal products and machinery; wood and paper; petroleum products; and motor vehicles. This is the largest jump in manufacturing production since the second quarter of 2016.Key facts from the third quarter 2018 GDP release:Expenditure on GDP increased by 2,3% in the third quarter of 2018.Gross fixed capital formation fell by 5,1% in the third quarter, largely as a result of declining investment in construction works, transport equipment, and non-residential buildings.Households spent more on food, beverages and household furnishings in the third quarter, driving up household final consumption expenditure by 1,6%.Unadjusted real GDP (measured by production) was up by 0,8% in the first nine months of 2018, compared with the first nine months of 2017.It is also important to take note of the number of initiatives the government has implemented to boost economic growth and job creation. In the manufacturing sector, government has finalised the Framework for Short-Term Negotiated Pricing Agreements on electricity and will expedite implementation.  While in the construction sector, the economic stimulus package identified infrastructure spending as a critical lever to economic activity. The stimulus package places an emphasizes on the following:Expanding and maintaining infrastructure to create jobs and attract investment.Establishing a South African Infrastructure Fund.Establishing a dedicated Infrastructure Execution Team.Unlocking infrastructure spending in identified 57 priority pilot municipalitiesIn addition, government also acknowledges the structural weaknesses in the economy and has initiated measures to create jobs which will complement the current commitments made in the Medium Term Strategic Framework. These include interventions agreed to at the Job Summit, commitments made during the Investment Summit and the Economic Stimulus and Recovery Plan.A total of 102 Black industrialists’ projects were funded by the Department of Trade and Industry and other government funding agencies with a total investment of R8.3 billion. This has created over 18 000 direct jobs and 18 000 indirect jobs. For a monthly overview of economic indicators and infographics, catch the latest edition of the Stats Biz newsletter here.last_img read more

Mind-blowing 3D printing feats & what to expect in 2018

first_imgFollow the Puck Cara Chatellier Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces If you had told the likes of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley about the technology advances in the future, they wouldn’t have believed you. Not only is technology leaps and bounds past the likes of ‘Big Brother’ and ‘soma’, but we are actually printing things that used to take significant time, factories, resources, and human assistance to build. How is this possible? 3D printing is taking the world by storm and it shows no signs of slowing down. What’s been done so far?3D printed buildingsIn 2015, Chinese company WinSun, printed not one, but two buildings. It gets better, they did this by using industrial waste which they transformed into new building material. To accomplish this feat, WinSun used a CAD design controlling an extruder arm which laid down the material. The walls were hollow and given a zig-zagging pattern which provided some reinforcement. This process saved between 30-60% of construction waste, reduced production times by 50-70%, and cut labor costs by up to 80%.See Also: Russian start-up 3D prints houses in 24 hours, raises $6 million for expansionPrinted FoodSure, there is a lot of artificial food on the market currently, but printed food? When powdered proteins, carbs, and sugars were printed together, they created an edible “Meal Cube”, which was created completely via a 3D printer. The idea behind “Meal Cubes” is to create a more sustainable food system by having efficient and economic ways to produce food.A Robotic ProstheticFour years ago, using only free online 3D printers, a Colorado high school student created a fully functioning prosthetic arm and hand. Since then, prosthetics have come quite a way, becoming fully available with custom-fitting parts and nearly full functionality. In fact, a printed prosthetic jaw bone was constructed from titanium powder creating a bone-like material. The patient who received the prosthetic was able to speak normally just a few minutes after his surgery. And…In addition to the above, a working gun, medical models and facial prosthesis are among other marvels that have been printed in recent years. What to expect for 2018Customized Production MaterialsAlmost everything that can be printed in 3D can also be personalized. Doctors and medical experts are already using 3D printing to create bone replacements fully customized for each patient. Experts of the industry are already experimenting with 3D printing using Graphene, a flexible and transparent substance, stronger than steel.Markforged, a Boston-based company, has just released new Composite 3D printing technology which prints tools and manufacturing parts with incredible strength. Fully functioning metal parts can be printed in under 24 hours with their new Metal X 3D printing system. The tool promises to save money and time especially for the manufacturing industry.Nano-PrintingNano-printing involves the printing of particles invisible to the naked eye. These particles, which are only a few atoms thick, could possibly transform electronics as we know them. These tiny printed particles are currently being tested to produce powerful batteries, and provide further processing power for devices.Additionally, nano-printing is currently being used to increase the optic power of the world’s telescopes and microscopes. According to Nanowerk.com, “these nanosensors can enhance the microscopes’ sensitivity and detection speed by miniaturizing their detection component up to 100 times”.Smart Robotic ArmsIn Belgium, students are in the process of creating a robotic arm which will be able to interpret and translate sign language. The birth of the idea came to be as a result of the small number of sign language translators available in the world.  Thus far, the machine can take text and translate it into finger spelling. The project still has a long way to go, but could significantly impact the hearing-impaired community.4D PrintingJust as you were starting to wrap your head around 3D printing, 4D printing comes to take it further. So, what is it? 4D printing is generally considered a part of 3D printing, however, 4D printed materials will be able to adapt to their environments and transform after they have been constructed. This programmable matter can react to outside factors like environment, head, humidity, etc.Technology continues to amaze us in the arena of 3D printing. 2018 will prove to be another mind-blowing year. So, buckle up and get ready to be wow-ed.
