Messi hat-trick fires Argentina into World Cup

first_img0Shares0000Argentina’s Lionel Messi (C) celebrates with teammates after defeating Ecuador and qualifying for the FIFA 2018 World Cup, in Quito, on October 10, 2017 © AFP / Juan RuizQUITO, Ecuador, Oct 11 – Lionel Messi scored a brilliant hat-trick as Argentina sealed their place at the 2018 World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Ecuador here Tuesday.Barcelona superstar Messi single-handedly rescued Argentina’s World Cup hopes as the South American giants came from behind to win in Quito. Romario Ibarra had given Ecuador a shock lead after only 38 seconds but Messi struck twice inside the opening 20 minutes to give Argentina the lead before adding a third in the second half.It was a vintage display from Messi, delivering for Argentina when it mattered most to erase fears that the two-time champions might not qualify for next year’s finals in Russia.Argentina had got off to a disastrous start, conceding a goal in the opening minute as Ecuador took full advantage of hesitancy in the visiting side’s defensive ranks.Argentina stalwart Javier Mascherano failed to deal with a speculative long ball forward from Dario Aimar, directing a headed clearance into the path of Romario Ibarra.Ecuador’s Romario Ibarra (R) is challenged by Argentina’s Gabriel Mercado during their FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifier match in Quito, on October 10, 2017 © AFP / Rodrigo BUENDIAIbarra calmly headed to team-mate Roberto Ordones who then steered a header back to Ibarra for the Universidad Catolica midfielder. It was the worst possible start for a shell-shocked Argentina, who had kicked off chasing their first victory in the Ecuadoran capital since 2001.For a while Argentina struggled to get to grips with a vibrant Ecuador, who looked to push forward at every opportunity. But it was not long before Messi stamped his authority on proceedings, hauling his team back into the contest with a composed opening goal. The equaliser came in the 12th minute when Messi darted forward and quickly released Angel Di Maria down the left. The Paris Saint-Germain attacker duly returned the favour as Messi raced into the penalty area to poke home a low finish past Maximo Banguera.Eight minutes later and Messi had fired Argentina into the lead with another virtuoso strike. When a loose ball fell kindly to the 30-year-old’s feet just outside the area, Messi accelerated past a clutch of yellow shirts and uncorked a thunderous left-foot shot which flew into the top corner.Messi’s double-blast galvanised Argentina, who gradually grew in confidence through the remainder of the half, carefully maintaining possession to frustrate Ecuador’s hopes of regaining the initiative.Messi then completed his hat-trick with the best goal of the night in the 62nd minute.Once again finding himself in space outside the Ecuador penalty area, the diminutive maestro burst clear and lofted an exquisite chip over Banguera from just inside the box to make it 3-1.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

I don’t take anything for granted: Imran Tahir after clinching Purple Cap

first_imgImran Tahir may well be the oldest player in the Indian Premier League this season but age is just a number for the South African superstar as he once again proved on Sunday by bagging two wickets for Chennai Super Kings to become the highest wicket-taker in the league after 3 games.Imran Tahir has been in good form for the defending champions and he continued his wicket-taking run as CSK beat Rajasthan Royals by 8 runs at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai.Tahir took over the purple cap from Yuzvendra Chahal and teammate Dwayne Bravo, even though all three bowlers have 6 wickets from three matches so far. Tahir though, is ahead because of a better average and economy rate than Chahal and Bravo at the moment.Delhi Capitals pacer Kagiso Rabada and Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell complete the top-five list with 5 wickets each from 3 games.”I am feeling very good, very proud. It was there (dew); I tried to use my experience but the ball was really wet. I am very happy. It’s always nerves. First match I dropped a catch, so didn’t want to repeat the mistake. Every catch is a difficult one,” Imran Tahir said after the match. The leg-spinner also opened up on his passionate celebration each time he takes a wicket.”It’s the passion and respect I have for the game. I don’t take anything for granted. Whenever I am playing, I try to contribute for my team,” Tahir said.Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni also praised the veteran Tahir, who has been with his team since last season.advertisementThere was a lot of dew on the field in the second innings with CSK defending 176. Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner found it hard to grip the ball but Tahir had no such trouble as he bowled beautifully and snared Tripathi and Smith in his first three overs to derail the Royals chase.Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer took the chase deep with their fiery 44-run stand but Dwayne Bravo bowled a brilliant last over, defending 12 runs that Royals needed to score to claim the win.”Jadeja and Santner found it hard to grip the ball and it was difficult to manage them. We were able to rotate, and the leg-spinner (Imran Tahir) bowled really well.”To be a wrist-spinner and bowl that way with the dew is very impressive,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony. Also Read | Watch: Ziva Dhoni grooves to popular Tamil song during CSK vs RR match in ChennaiAlso Read | IPL 2019: MS Dhoni impressed with Imran Tahir’s control after CSK win thrillerAlso Read | MS Dhoni storms to his highest ever IPL score in Chennai after flurry of sixeslast_img read more

The Mets Pitching Staff Went From Great To Garbage In The Blink

To say it’s been a challenging season in Queens would be an understatement. Originally slated to contend for the NL East crown, the 2017 New York Mets currently sit in a tie for third place, 7 games below .500 and a whopping 11 games back of the first-place Washington Nationals. The team has been accompanied by a near-constant stream of off-the-field controversies, and its playoff chances are rapidly approaching zero. Even the club’s jolly anthropomorphized baseball has turned belligerent. At the core of New York’s on-field frustrations has been the performance of its pitching staff, which not so long ago was gracing Sports Illustrated covers and inspiring meditations about the ideal way to build a modern baseball team. The fireballing days of Noah Syndergaard — who hit the disabled list with a torn muscle in early May — and cohorts are a distant memory, and those stars have been replaced by fill-ins who barely register on the radar gun and a beleaguered bullpen asked to shoulder a historic workload. (In their latest outing, the Mets burned through five pitchers — a normal amount by the team’s recent standards — just to yield 11 runs against the Pirates.)Just how much of a pitching drop-off have the Mets endured this year? Last season, New York led all clubs in the wins above replacement (WAR)1I’m averaging together the versions of this stat found at Baseball-Reference.com and FanGraphs.com. it received from its pitchers, with the 39th-best tally any team had in a season since 1901. This season, they rank sixth to last in baseball in pitching WAR, putting them on pace for the team’s worst showing on the mound since 1996. On a per-162-game basis, that makes for the fifth-biggest year-to-year decline by any MLB pitching staff since 1901: YEARTEAMSEASONPREVIOUS SEASONDIFFERENCE 41915Athletics-4.713.9-18.6 82000Astros9.024.3-15.4 71997Padres6.522.2-15.7 Some of the teams ahead of the Mets on that list had their excuses: The 2004 Diamondbacks traded Curt Schilling to the Red Sox over the previous offseason, and the 1998 Marlins engaged in one of the most notorious talent dumps in baseball history. The Mets made no such trades. The rotation’s lone offseason departure was 44-year-old Bartolo Colon, a loss that seemed more than mitigated by the late-season emergence of Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo, plus the return of a healthy Zack Wheeler. If anything, the team appeared to have more pitching than it knew what to do with. Even after adjusting for the inevitability of injuries, it seemed unthinkable back in spring training that New York’s pitching would be only a tad better than that of, say, the ghastly Cincinnati Reds. But the notion of the Mets having “too much pitching” sounds absurd in hindsight. After injuries to Syndergaard, Lugo, Steven Matz and closer Jeurys Familia,2Matz and Lugo haven’t pitched a single game this season. to go with an underperforming campaign by Matt Harvey, the Mets are on track to get about 13 fewer WAR from their staff this season than what was conservatively expected in spring training. (Even after accounting for what has been a surprisingly decent offense, that would make this the sixth-most-disappointing season in Mets history in terms of actual team WAR delivered compared to preseason expectations, and the worst in that department since 2003.3Interestingly, the statistical list of New York’s most disappointing seasons — 1972, then 1992, 2003, 1991, 1977 and 2017 — matches up very well with this subjective list generated by celebrated Mets blogger Jason Fry.)For a team predicated on great pitching and just enough hitting to get by, it’s hard to win when the former ends up being worse than the latter. And although the Mets’ numbers could improve when they get some of their injured pitchers back, it probably won’t be enough to save the team’s fortunes this season. The extent to which any of this was preventable — and, if it was, who should be blamed for it — will be debated for years. The team’s training staff is a popular target, but my colleague Rob Arthur found that although the Mets have had more than their share of ailments, they’re hardly the league’s most snakebit team on the injury front. It’s even worth wondering, as New York Magazine’s Will Leitch does here, whether the DL was the inevitable destination for a group of hurlers built specifically to throw the ball just about as hard as any staff ever has. Either way, they always say that young pitchers will break your heart — and these Mets couldn’t embody that axiom more if they tried. MP for West Grand Bahama and Bimini Speaks to the role of

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp #Bahamas, October 5, 2017 – Nassau – New legislation is needed for the abuses in communication, whether it is fake news or irresponsible use of social media, said Pakesia Parker-Edgecome, Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama and Bimini, on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, during her contribution in the House of Assembly.Mrs. Edgecombe made her remarks during the debate, in which she thanked the Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, for her Speech from the Throne. The Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Communication in the Office of the Prime Minister said that she oversees Cinemas and Films, Radio and Television Broadcasting, Bahamas Information Services, Cable Television, Relations with the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, and Relations with BTC.She stated that even though many strides have been made at the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB), there still remain many hurdles that are faced.   “We are a democratic nation, and with democracy comes freedom.   With that freedom, however Mr. Deputy Speaker, we must remain responsible.”The BCB is where she started, noted Mrs. Edgecombe, and said it was good to her and played an integral role in where she is today.   “So therefore, Mr. Deputy Speaker, keenly aware of the challenges that the BCB may still face, I take it personal when persons continue to lambast the corporation and the many talented workers that are there.”Every entity has its difficulties, she added, and what exists today is as a result of many Members of Parliament having utilized ZNS as their personal public relations machine, the corporation thus following them at their whim. She pointed out: “Mr. Deputy Speaker, let me remind this House that ZNS is a news organization, while Bahamas Information Services is the government’s PR machinery.“That means the professionals get to choose what they deem newsworthy and of national importance at ZNS – the professionals.   So therefore, I appeal to my fellow Parliamentarians, let the staff of the BCB do their job without feeling that if they were to make a decision in the best interest of the organization, a pink slip will follow.“I also advise my fellow colleagues that the Bahamas Information Services is the government’s PR machinery.   Each Ministry is equipped with an Information Officer, all you need to know is the name of that person, and you will have your PR right intact.   BIS is here for you, that is the PR machinery.”Mrs. Edgecombe addressed what is a growing concern in the community.   “Whether it be fake news or the irresponsible use of social media, Mr. Deputy Speaker, it is high time that further legislation is brought, necessary to curb the abuses in communication.”   She added that she, along with her team, will work along that avenue.Communication will lead the way in all the work that needs to be done; and even though little attention was given to this area in the Speech from the Throne, she thinks that this will change in the future.By: Robyn Adderly (BIS)Photo Caption:  Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Communication in the Office of the Prime Minister, Pakesia Parker-Edgecombe.  (BIS Photo) 18003732876center_img Related Items:last_img read more

Hacker duo hijacks thousands of Chromecasts and Google smart TVs to play

first_imgOn Wednesday, a hacker duo hijacked thousands of Google’s Chromecast streaming adapters, Google Home smart speakers and smart TVs with built-in Chromecast technology to play a video urging users to subscribe to Swedish Youtuber ‘PewDiePie’s’ Youtube channel. The hacked smart TV’s also displayed a message on the similar lines. The hackers behind this hacking campaign –codenamed CastHack– are known on Twitter as TheHackerGiraffe and j3ws3r. The attack took advantage of badly configured routers to find streaming devices exposed to the public internet. Once found, the hackers renamed the device’s Wi-Fi name, and then played a PewDiePie Youtube video. A website detailing the hack lists the statistics on the number of devices forced to play the video, total renamed devices, total exposed devices and much more. The website shared some of the information the hackers had access to, including “what WIFI your Chromecast/Google Home is connected to, what bluetooth devices it has paired to, how long it’s been on, what WiFi networks your device remembers, what alarms you have set, and much more.” However, they state that “We’re only trying to protect you and inform you of this before someone takes real advantage of it. Imagine the consequences of having access to the information above.” They further added that  “We want to help you, and also our favorite Youtubers (mostly PewDiePie)’. According to Variety, the attack was part of a marketing campaign- “Subscribe to PewDiePie”-that fans of the Swedish video-game streamer and vlogger have been engaged in since late last year. The goal of that campaign is to defeat the Indian Youtube channel T-Series for the title of ‘Youtube’s most popular channel’ by gaining more subscribers than the latter. How did the attack take place? The attack exploited a Chromecast bug allegedly ignored by Google for almost five years. According to ZDNet, the ongoing CastHack takes advantage of users who use incorrectly configured routers that have the UPnP (Universal Plug’n’Play) service enabled, a service which forwards specific ports from the internal network on the Internet. The ports are 8008, 8009, and 8443, normally used by smart TVs, Chromecasts, and Google Home for various management functions. The streaming devices expose these ports on internal networks, where users can operate them by sending commands from their smartphones or computers to the devices for remote management purposes. Routers with incorrectly configured UPnP settings make these ports available on the internet. This allowed FriendlyH4xx0r to scan the entire internet for devices with these ports exposed. Once devices are identified, the hacker said another script renames the devices to “HACKED_SUB2PEWDS_#” and then tries to autoplay a video (now taken down by Youtube) to promote PewDiePie’s channel. A Google spokesperson, told Variety via email: “To restrict the ability for external videos to be played on their devices, users can turn off Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Please note that turning off UPnP may disable some devices (e.g. printers, game consoles, etc.) that depend on it for local device discovery.” This is the second time that HackerGiraffe and j3ws3r have teamed up to promote PewDiePie’s channel. Both said they were behind a hack in November that forced printers around the world to print out sheets of paper telling people to subscribe to PewDiePie.
