Pakistan recall Akmal, Shafiq for Windies ODIs

first_imgPAKISTAN have recalled batsmen Umar Akmal and Asad Shafiq for the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies in the UAE.Fast bowlers Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali have also been included in the 16-member squad. Sami Aslam and Umar Gul, who were in the squad for the England ODIs, have been excluded, while Mohammad Hafeez will miss the series due to an injury. Both Shafiq and Akmal last played in the format in 2015. While Shafiq’s previous match came in October 2015 against Zimbabwe in Harare, Akmal has not been part of an ODI XI since the 2015 World Cup.Shafiq was picked after a strong showing in the recent National T20 Cup. He was the fourth-highest run-scorer with 310 at an average of 51.66 and a strike rate of 139.01. Akmal was recently recalled to the T20I side after assuring the PCB that there would not be any further issues with his conduct. He had been left out of the training camp in May, before the England tour, due to disciplinary reasons.Hafeez has been rested after suffering a calf injury. Earlier, a similar injury had forced him out of the England series after the first ODI. The injury also kept him out of the T20I series against West Indies. Sharjeel Khan, Babar Azam and captain Azhar Ali will fulfill the top-order responsibilities. Azhar’s captaincy will also be under scrutiny in the series, following the 4-1 series defeat to England earlier this month.Sohail, who has played 12 ODIs between 2008 and 2015, with the last one during the 2015 World Cup, was picked in place of Gul who had a disappointing series against England. Gul took 3 for 23 against Ireland but had a tougher time in the ODIs against England. He took three wickets in as many matches at an average of 54.The squad also includes a specialist spinner in Yasir Shah and three spin-bowling allrounders – Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim and Shoaib Malik. The first and second ODIs will be played in Sharjah on September 30 and October 2 respectively, with the third match scheduled for October 5 in Abu Dhabi. Both teams will be looking to improve their rankings. West Indies are currently eighth on the ICC ODI Championship table with 94 points, while Pakistan are ninth on 86 pointsPakistan ODI squadAzhar Ali, Sharjeel Khan, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed, Umar Akmal, Mohammad Rizwan, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz, Yasir Shah, Rahat Ali, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Sohail Khan. Why You Need Sleep

first_imgA study in the Jan. 22 issue of Nature1 claims that sleep gives you inspiration.  Sleep is not just a waste of a third of your day; it helps consolidate memories, and provides pivotal insights.  “Insight denotes a mental restructuring that leads to a sudden gain of explicit knowledge allowing qualitatively changed behaviour,” the five researchers explain.  Human subjects trained in a new task uncovered a “hidden rule” after sleep, regardless of time of day.  Various aspects of their experiments led the team to conclude that “sleep, by restructuring new memory representations, facilitates extraction of explicit knowledge and insightful behaviour.”1Wagner, Gais, Haider, Verleger and Born, “Sleep inspires insight,” Nature 427, 352 – 355 (22 January 2004); doi:10.1038/nature02223.Don’t feel guilty about sleep.  Everything has its purpose, even letting your mind wander as your body goes limp in horizontal position once a day.  A lot is going on in that brain.  So now you have new justification for that power nap.  But sleep after the boss’s meeting, not during.  (Same rule applies to the Sunday sermon.)(Visited 11 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Stadium safety: leaving nothing to chance

first_img10 June 2008Stadium security is back in the spotlight following the deaths of 10 spectators at a recent 2010 World Cup qualifying match in Liberia. While the jury is still out over the causes of this tragedy, it has once again highlighted an emotive issue. The rumblings over whether South Africa was capable of hosting a World Cup first started when 43 spectators lost their lives at a Kaizer Chiefs/Orlando Pirates match back in 2001. It was the worst accident in South African sports history, surpassing a stampede a decade earlier, when 42 people died during a match between the same two teams in the mining town of Orkney.Danny Jordaan, who was the CEO of the SA Football Association at the time, called for cool heads. He reminded the international community of similar tragedies like Heysel in 1985, when 30 people died during the European Cup final, or Hillsborough (four years later), when a stampede left 96 Liverpool supporters dead.Nevertheless, Jordaan took the painful decision to postpone plans for the launch of the country’s 2010 bid. A commission of inquiry was conducted and a number of recommendations were made. And since South Africa was awarded the rights to 2010, many more safety measures have been introduced at stadiums around the country. It’s safe to say that spectator safety is unlikely to be a problem for either the 2009 Confederations Cup or the 2010 World Cup.As part of Africa’s 2010 legacy, it is crucial that South Africa shares these lessons with the rest of the continent.Urquhart is a former Fifa World Cup media officer and the current editor of Project 2010last_img read more

It was the Lionel Messi show as his hat-trick guided Argentina to a routine 4-0 friendly win over Haiti with the World Cup looming. With the World Cup set to get underway in Russia next month, two-time champions Argentina stepped up their preparations thanks to captain Messi’s three-goal haul in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.Messi took his international tally to 64 goals in 124 appearances – the Barcelona star’s penalty breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute before he completed his hat-trick in eight second-half minutes against the Caribbean minnows.
