Major flooding continues South as new storm to bring snow to California, Southwest

first_imgABC NewsBy MAX GOLEMBO, ABC News(NEW YORK) — Rivers continue to flow out of their banks from Texas to West Virginia where 18 states are on alert for flooding on Wednesday. The Kentucky River and Ohio River are most at risk for major to moderate flooding to continue for the next several days as entire towns continue to be submerged under water in Kentucky where a state of emergency has been declared. The rain, however, should stay away from the flooded region for the next several days.A new storm system is set to move into southern California Wednesday with snow for Los Angeles and San Diego mountains. This would be the first rain in Los Angeles since January.Locally, 6 inches of snow is possible for higher elevations north and east of Los Angeles and San Diego. This storm will move into the southern and central Rockies by Wednesday night with heavy snow expected from northern Arizona into Utah, Colorado and northern New Mexico, and some areas could see more than 10 inches of snow by Thursday. In the Northeast and for most of the country, it will feel like spring Wednesday with temperatures near 60 in Denver, near 70 in Kansas City, in the 50s for Chicago and New York City and near 60 in Washington, D.C.Unfortunately, the Northeast will not keep the mild spring-like weather for the rest of the week. The cold air will return to the Northeast by Thursday night and into Friday, with wind chills once again dropping below zero in upstate New York and New England.Copyright © 2021, ABC Audio. Virus deaths nearly doubling Milan’s normal mortality rate

first_imgDeaths still rising Lombardy was reporting about two-thirds of Italy’s virus deaths when the rate of officially registered infections was still soaring daily in the early part of March.Neighboring regions with high death tolls have been reporting lower infection rates throughout the crisis.AFP’s comparison of the data reflects that. The neighboring Emilia Romagna region reported 1,640 COVID-19 deaths last month. That corresponds to around 40 percent of its estimated monthly deaths average of 4,150 for 2018.The Piedmont region around the industrial city of Turin reported 854 COVID-19 related deaths.AFP estimates that it would have otherwise witnessed around 4,486 deaths.A report authored by an Italian expert at European Society of Anaesthesiology also looked at the data and found that Italy’s death toll will keep rapidly climbing for some time.”The data suggest that the increase in numbers of patients in intensive care in both the Lombardy region and Italy as a whole are likely to have peaked,” the report said. But “the numbers of deaths in hospital will continue to increase at the maximum rate for several days to come”. 969 is a lot The northern Lombardy region that includes the financial capital Milan turned into the global epicenter of the pandemic when Italy overtook China’s official death toll on March 19.Lombardy is Italy’s industrial heartland and includes heavily-affected cities such as Bergamo and Brescia to Milan’s east. The region recorded 99,542 deaths from all causes in 2018 — a rough monthly average of 8,300.It reported 7,176 coronavirus deaths in March. All countries’ monthly deaths vary depending on the season.United Nations data show Italy recording the highest number of deaths in January and the lowest in June.March turns out to be a statistically average month. This suggests that Lombardy’s official toll from COVID-19 last month — 7,176 — was just under 15 percent shy of the number of people who would have statistically been expected to die in March without the epidemic.Bergamo Mayor Giorgio Gori said Wednesday he does not trust the official figures and thinks the real toll may be twice as high. The mayor tweeted a newspaper analysis suggesting that the COVID-19 toll in the Bergamo province was “between 4,500 and 5,000, and not the 2,060″ officially reported.”How many are infected then?” the Bergamo mayor asked. He cited a local statistics agency analysis indicating 26 percent of Bergamo province’s 1.1 million people had the virus.”I fear that the figure is higher,” the mayor tweeted. Italian officials acknowledge that their coronavirus data are incomplete with deaths from COVID-19 related causes outside hospitals often not counted. The number of people who died after catching the virus without ever being tested is unknown. So is the number of people who died of other causes because they could not get treatment from hospitals dealing with a ceaseless flow of COVID-19 patients. Some newspapers are asking why jumps in March deaths reported individually by some cities do not appear to be reflected in the national tally.”The death count does not add up,” the Il Fatto Quotidiano said Wednesday. Here is what the official figures do show. But the tolls being read out daily by health officials in Rome can often seem hard to quantify. The civil protection service disclosed a record 969 deaths for last Friday. That sounds like a lot — but how does that compare to the number of people who usually die in Italy in a day?AFP tried to figure this out by comparing 2018 data from Italy’s official statistic agency ISTAT — the last available for all regions — and the coronavirus deaths reported by the civil protection service in March.center_img The torrent of Italian death data reveals that the region around Milan with a population of 10 million reported almost as many coronavirus fatalities in March as it would normally have done from all other causes. The Mediterranean country of 60 million people is living through its worst disaster since World War II.It registered 12,399 COVID-19 related deaths last month — thousands more than officially reported by any other country. VAR wins but Chelsea frustrated by Arsenal stalemate

first_imgLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | Chelsea wasted a chance to take control of their League Cup semi-final against Arsenal as the misfiring Blues were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw in Wednesday’s first leg.Antonio Conte’s side dominated possession for long periods at Stamford Bridge — where the Video Assistant Referee system (VAR) was in operation — but lacked the killer instinct required to take a step towards the final. They had 21 shots to just eight from Arsenal, yet the tie remains on a knife-edge heading into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium on January 24.While it was a frustrating evening for Chelsea as they chase a first League Cup final berth since 2015, the stalemate was a welcome tonic for their London rivals.Arsenal, who also drew both Premier League encounters with Chelsea this season, suffered one of the most chastening defeats of Arsene Wenger’s reign on Sunday as second tier Nottingham Forest won 4-2 in the FA Cup third round. While Arsenal were well below their best once again, in contrast to their surrender in Nottingham, the Frenchman will be encouraged that they showed enough spirit to keep Chelsea at bay.Conte had mostly fielded fringe players en route to the last four, but Eden Hazard, back from a calf injury, N’Golo Kante and Thibaut Courtois were called upon with a Wembley showdown against Manchester City or Bristol City in sight.Wenger surprisingly left Alexis Sanchez on the bench amid talk of the unsettled Chile forward joining Manchester City, while Mesut Ozil missed out with a knee injury.Wenger was watching from the press box as he serves his touchline ban and the Gunners boss was shifting anxiously in his seat early on when Hazard’s pass gave Alvaro Morata an opportunity that he drove into the side-netting.After a tepid opening from Arsenal, Alexandre Lacazette escaped the Chelsea defence to collect Jack Wilshere’s pass, but the French striker wasted the chance as he scuffed a hurried shot wide.Chelsea wing-back Victor Moses forced David Ospina into action with a stinging drive that the Arsenal goalkeeper fumbled before recovering to snatch the ball away from Morata. – Ineffective –Moses was proving a problem for young left-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles and the Nigerian found space for another shot moments later, this time his low shot hit Ospina’s near post before Arsenal scrambled it away.Alex Iwobi was selected despite Wenger saying he could be fined for reportedly partying until the early hours of Saturday morning and the Arsenal winger almost repaid his manager’s faith with a drive that Courtois pushed away. When Maitland-Niles went down under pressure from Moses in the area, referee Martin Atkinson consulted the Video Assistant Referee, but no penalty was given.Fabregas should have given Chelsea the lead just before half-time, but the former Arsenal midfielder wastefully headed straight at Ospina from close-range.Andreas Christensen fared no better after the interval when the Chelsea defender dived to head over from inside the six-yard box.Chelsea were piecing together their most convincing spell of pressure, but they couldn’t find the finishing touch as Morata’s powerful effort was well saved by Ospina.Wenger’s response was to send on Sanchez for the ineffective Lacazette with 25 minutes left, yet within seconds Moses almost broke the deadlock when his goal-bound shot was deflected over by Shkodran Mustafi. When Christensen headed wide of an open goal after Ospina misjudged a corner, Conte must have feared it wouldn’t be Chelsea’s night. So it proved as Willian was denied by Ospina and Fabregas clipped a post in the closing moments.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Ivey: $9.6 million Atlantic City baccarat win was all skill

first_imgIn this July 15, 2009 file photo, Phil Ivey looks up during the World Series of Poker at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. (AP Photo/Laura Rauch, File)ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — World-famous poker player Phil Ivey says his disputed $9.6 million baccarat win at Atlantic City’s Borgata casino was all skill, and he’s seeking the dismissal of a lawsuit in which the casino accuses him of cheating.Ivey’s spokesman John Falcicchio told The Associated Press the motion was filed Wednesday night. In April, the Borgata sued Ivey, alleging he and an associate exploited a defect in cards that enabled them to sort and arrange good cards. The casino asserted that technique gave him an unfair advantage on four occasions between April and October 2012. The casino says the technique, called edge sorting, violates New Jersey casino gambling regulations. But Ivey’s motion says his win was simply the result of skill and good observation.“Each and every penny of defendants’ winnings was the result of sheer skill,” Ivey’s lawyers wrote in court papers. The Borgata had no immediate comment. In legal terms, Ivey’s lawyers responded to the lawsuit in three main ways. They asserted that Ivey and the associate did nothing that could be considered cheating; that a six-month statute of limitations to recover money lost in a supposedly illegal game had expired; and that supposed violations of state casino regulations can be pursued only by state gambling regulators, not by casinos. The lawsuit says the cards were defective in that the pattern on the back was not uniform. The cards have rows of small white circles designed to look like the tops of cut diamonds, but the Borgata says some of them were only half-diamonds or quarters. The lawsuit says that Ivey and his companion instructed a dealer to flip cards in particular ways, depending on whether they were desirable cards in baccarat: the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9. It says bad cards would be flipped in different directions, so that after several hands of cards, the good ones were arranged in a certain manner — with the irregular sides of the cards facing in a specific direction — that Ivey could spot when they came out of the dealer chute. The lawsuit says Ivey wanted the cards shuffled by an automatic shuffling machine, which would not alter the way each card was aligned.Ivey’s response says he simply noticed things that anyone playing the game could have observed and bet accordingly.Responding to a lawsuit Ivey filed in Britain’s High Court against Malaysia-based casino operator Genting Group involving a similar dispute, Genting made a similar accusation against Ivey. It alleges Ivey and an accomplice amassed almost $12 million by cheating at baccarat. Ivey has denied any misconduct.Ivey won his 10th World Series of Poker bracelet last week. He is tied for the second most all time.___Wayne Parry can be reached at http://twitter.com/WayneParryAClast_img read more

Formula One income accruing from permanent establishment

first_imgtaxable: SCNew Delhi, Apr 24 (PTI) The Supreme Court today held that Formula One World Championship (FOWC) which conducts Formula One car racing events, has a permanent establishment (PE) for its business in India and income accruing from it is taxable.A permanent establishment (PE) is a fixed place of business which generally gives rise to income or value-added tax liability in a particular jurisdiction.”We have held that FOWC has PE in India and income that is attributable in India will be taxed. The amount that is to be taxed is to be assessed by an assessing officer,” a bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said.Advocate Ankur Saigal, who appeared for Jaypee Group, said that though the detailed judgement is awaited but the apex court has held that an assessing officer will assess the income to be taxed.Jaypee Group, in association with others, has organised Formula One car races in Greater Noida, adjacent to national capital in the past few years. The first edition of the championship took place on October 30, 2011. Jaypee Sports International Limited is the organiser of Formula One racing in India and has signed a five-year contract with Formula One Management (FOM) to host the championship in India. The event did not take place in 2014 and since then because of an ongoing tax dispute with the Uttar Pradesh government, the event has not been held.FOWC has challenged last years Delhi High Court judgement which had ruled that a payment by Jaiprakash Associates Ltd for the use of FOWC logos and symbols to promote the Grand Prix couldnt be considered royalty and be taxed as such.advertisementThe high court had also ruled that FOWC has a permanent establishment in India for conducting its business and set aside the finding of the Authority of Advance Ruling (AAR) on the issue. It had said the use of trademarks was purely incidental and as event organiser and host of the F1 Grand Prix Championship, Jaypee was bound to use the F1 marks, logos and devices.FOWC and Jaypee group had approached the AAR to ascertain if the payment received by FOWC outside India from Jaypee could be considered royalty or not in terms of the double taxation avoidance agreement between the UK and Indian governments.Another question for consideration before the AAR was whether FOWC had a permanent establishment for its business in India which it found that the payment was royalty and taxable and that Formula One did not have a permanent establishment in India. Vloggers can promote unhealthy food intake in kids

first_imgUnhealthy food endorsements by video bloggers, or vloggers, on Instagram increase children’s intake of such foods, a study suggests. Children are increasingly exposed to marketing through digital avenues, such as on social media, and the impact of marketing by vloggers on these outcomes has, until now, not been known, said researchers from the University of Liverpool in the UK. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, examined the effect of social media marketing of snack foods (healthy and unhealthy), via vloggers’ Instagram pages, on children’s snack intake. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”These findings suggest that the marketing of unhealthy foods, via vloggers’ Instagram pages, increases children’s immediate energy intake,” said Anna Coates, PhD student at the University of Liverpool. “The results are supported by celebrity endorsement data, which show unhealthy food endorsements increase children’s unhealthy food intake, but healthy food endorsements have little or no effect on healthy food intake.” During the study 176 children, aged between 9 and 11 years, were randomly split into three equal groups and were shown artificially created, but realistic, Instagram pages of popular vloggers (each has millions of followers). Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveOne group was shown images of the vlogger with unhealthy snacks, the second group was shown images of the vlogger with healthy snacks and the third group was shown images of the vlogger with non-food products. The participants’ subsequent intake of snacks were measured. Children in the group that viewed the unhealthy snack images consumed 32 per cent more kilo calories (kcals) from unhealthy snacks specifically and 26 per cent more kcals in total (from healthy and unhealthy snacks) compared with children who saw the non-food images. There was no significant difference in total kcal intake, or healthy snack kcal intake, between children who saw the Instagram profile with healthy images and those who saw the non-food images. “Young people trust vloggers more than celebrities,” Coates said.last_img read more
