It has been widely speculated since the start of the year that Quallo would be leaving office because of pressure from the Minister of National Security, Robert Montague. An apparent rift between Jamaica’s top cop and the security minister arose following massive traffic delays on the Palisadoes road leading to the Norman Manley International Airport on January 1.in Kingston on January 1.  The traffic congestion was caused by unruly drivers parking on the road during a holiday party on a beach adjacent to the road.It was reported that at a meeting with the minister Quallo was given the option to resign, but he refused that option deciding instead to continue his duties as commissioner until his retirement becomes official in August this year. Police officers retire at age 60 or can opt for early retirement after serving for 30 years. However, Quallo has bought forward his retirement to be effective within the next few days.Clifford Blake to serve as Acting CommissionerDeputy Commissioner of Police Clifford Blake is expected to serve as Acting Commissioner until a replacement is found.Responding to the news of Quallo’s departure, the opposition People’s National Party (PNP)  says news of his departure has come at a bad time with a State of  Emergency in effect in St. James. However, PNP Spokesman on National Security, Fitz Jackson says he is not surprised given recent developments. “Well as the country is aware, there has been much uneasiness between the Commissioner and the Minister (of National Security), which is regrettable. I have now become aware that the commissioner will depart at the end of the month and we hope that there will be some stability as quickly as possible,” Jackson said.last_img read more

Robert Runcie STAYS!!

first_imgAfter a year of severe criticism and blame following the tragic shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school in Parkland, Florida, and over four hours of mostly favorable public support at the Broward School Board meeting on Tuesday, the Board voted 6-3 to retain Robert Runcie as Broward School Superintendent. He has held this office since 2011.Vote 6- 3 to stay in office Recently elected board member Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter was among the victim of the February 14, 2018 shooting in Parkland and who placed the decision to consider terminating Runcie on Tuesday’s board meeting voted to fire Runcie. Casting votes to dismiss were also board members Nora Rupert and Robin Bartleman.  Board Chairwoman Heather Brinkworth, Ann Murray, Laurie Rich Levinson, Patti Good, Rosalind Osgood and Donna Korn all voted to retain the Runcie’s services. High percentage of supportersA large crowd of mostly Runcie supporters gathered at the headquarters of the Broward School District on Tuesday. Several of those present gave passionate speeches urging either the retention or dismissal of the school superintendent. Over 90 percent of those who spoke were in favor of not dismissing him.Lauderdale lake Mayor Hazelle Rogers, who in the days before the meeting urged the Broward community to turn out t the meeting to give Runcie support, was one of those who was vocal in their support. She spoke of the positives Runcie did to improve the quality of Broward schools and education. Like other speakers she said he was not responsible for the Parkland tragedy, and has been doing a great job to improve security since the tragedy.Other speakers supporting Runcie included Broward Commissioner Dale Holness, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam, and West Park Vice Mayor Brian Johnson.Bring about healing“This community suffered a great tragedy,” Holness said. “We all feel the pain. We continue to share the grief and suffering of everyone who lost someone in that tragedy. We ought to be bringing about healing. This will not bring about healing.”Despite claims that the support and non-support was based on racist lines, with the support overwhelmingly African and Caribbean American several white and Hispanic individuals stood up for Runcie.Throughout the public debate Runcie remained seated, stone-faced, not displaying either positive or negative emotions. His wife Diana, also spoke on her husband’s behalf telling the board members that she is witness to his daily effort to improve Broward schools, and pointing to him said, “You have a diamond in that seat”After the outcome of the vote was announced there was cheers in the halls of the district and the parking lot outside. Some people loudly suggested Alhadeff, Rupert and Bartleman to resign from the board “How can they continue to work with and support him, if they wanted to fire him,” said one resident.Extends olive branch But Runcie extended the olive branch to his critics after the vote saying, “It’s now time for healing and time “to fix the woes that have plagued the school district.” He said the tragedy could have happened anywhere, “it just happened to have been in Broward County…. Over the past year my time and effort have been consumed worth working on school safety and security.”With the effort to dismiss him having failed Runcie is expected to continue his tenure as Broward School Superintendent until November June 2023, in accordance with his contract which was renewed for the second time in November 2017.last_img read more

Netball: Encouraging Young Girls Into Sports in Lagos State.

first_imgExcerpts from his interview are as follows:“It’s a massive step because we’ve got the BNB girls over the last couple of years trying to bring netball back into Lagos State so this is a massive step forward. You saw the school girls that came-the kid thing. What we are trying to do at the Lagos State Sports Commission is to encourage more girls to go into sports and in doing that we looked at netball and we felt that would attract them more than football or one of the other sports because it’s gender specific.Guys don’t play netball only girls play netball so they are not going to be competing with the guys for space and again it’s not a rough sport, easy to learn, in terms of equipment easy, cheap as well so we feel it’s something they would be attracted to. We get more ladies in sport give them a lot more attention and we would be getting a lot more kids off the street. The Ghanaians have been playing and I hear every school plays netball in Ghana so obviously they’ve got a pathway, that’s why they’ve got a very good team. So hopefully in the near future we get every girl school to play netball in Lagos and we get a very good team that can challenge the Ghanaians at least put us on a level par and then we can have school championships, we can have clubs and hopefully grow fantastic netball in Lagos and in the country”. “Deji Tinubu Netball” Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Sports, Deji Tinubu, has described netball as a way of encouraging more girls into sports in Lagos State. He said this during an interview with busybuddiesng.com at the West African Netball Clubs’ Fest which took place at the Molade Okoya Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium. He stated that the Lagos State Sports Commission is looking for avenues to encourage more girls into sports and have chosen to work with netball because of its gender sensitivity towards girls. In addition, he described netball as an easy to learn sport, not rough, cheap in terms of equipment and also described it as a means of getting kids off the streets. He further described the event as a massive step in a bid to bring back netball to Lagos State and said it wouldn’t be a onetime thing. He hopes in the near future every girls’ school in the state would have a netball team that can compete against each other in school championships, and this would transcend into clubs at different levels to produce a State team that can challenge or at least put the state on a level par with the Ghanaians who encourage every school girl to play netball. In conclusion he also hopes that the successful execution of plans to promote netball in the state, would motivate other states to follow en-suite. The event which was organised by the Lagos State Sports Commission in conjunction with the Bringing Netball Back (BNB) Lagos team was a friendly match between the BNB Lagos based team and the Golden Maidens of Accra. It also had in attendance Hellen Manufor of the Nigerian Netball Federation, and school girls from various public schools within the state. read more

Betting hots up in race for Scottish football’s top job

first_img StumbleUpon Share PokerStars moves to refresh global appeal with ‘I’M IN’ August 18, 2020 Submit Winamax maintains Granada CF sponsorship despite bleak Spanish outlook August 19, 2020 MansionBet adds Bristol City to sponsorship portfolio August 20, 2020 Share Related Articles Gordon Strachan has inevitably been relieved of his duties as Scotland manager following the disappointing 2-2 draw with Slovenia in Ljubljana five days ago. That result ended any hopes of a second placed finish in Group F and a playoff berth, with the 2018 Russia World Cup now a mere pipe dream, one that will mark twenty years since the nation last qualified for international football’s premier tournament.Plenty of names have been linked with the now vacant post, and Mikey Mumford, a Football Trader for Sky Bet, has given SBC the rundown on the race for the managerial position and who customers are backing:  “Malky Mackay has been overtaken as favourite, such is the support for David Moyes, and punters feel Scotland may give him the platform to repair his reputation following unsuccessful stints at Old Trafford and in Spain.“Punters are focusing on half a dozen potential replacements – Moyes, Lambert, Mackay, Allardyce, O’Neill and former Scotland boss ‘Big Eck’ who has attracted a little bit of interest to make a Hampden Park return.“We released the market following Scotland’s failure to qualify after the Slovenia fixture and we’ve laid a fairly decent spread of business since. “Six potential candidates have been well supported since news of Strachan’s departure broke, notably Sam Allardyce and David Moyes who account for almost half of the number of bets we have seen. “Allardyce was available at 20/1 immediately after the Tartan Army’s 2-2 draw in Ljubljana but has since shortened into 6/1 behind David Moyes and Paul Lambert. “The former was installed as the early 5/1 market leader and has since hardened into half the price at 5/2 and is still proving popular, while Lambert is looking to get back in after a brief spell at Wolves and he’s now rated a 7/2 chance from 12/1.”Away from the favourites, are any of the outsiders perking any interest?  And is there anyone in particular who Mumford himself is backing, he added:  “As mentioned previously stakes have been concentrated on those half dozen, we’ve seen bits and pieces for Alex Neil at 14/1 who has started the campaign very well at Preston North End. “Typically Sir Alex always gets backed for the job at 33/1, but perhaps more interesting is current Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes at 8/1, who has a very impressive win rate at the Dons since taking over in 2013. “We pitched the former Bristol City chief in at 6/1 on Saturday and despite drifting to 14/1 over the course of the weekend, a steady stream of business has forced his price back nearer to our original show. He’s at a decent age and looks a solid contender at this very early stage.”last_img read more

World Cup diary – Localizing the product to BetRegal’s target markets

first_img Altenar: Supporting expansion plans in Denmark and Portugal August 20, 2020 StumbleUpon Ilya Machavariani, Dentons – CIS regional dynamics will come to play prior to gambling take-off July 31, 2020 Related Articles Share TVBET passes GLI test for five live games in Malta and Italy August 25, 2020 Share Submit BetRegal.com, a new sportsbook created to provide its customers with the “highest possible value” in prices, is on the road to Russia for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.In the third diary of this World Cup series, Aly Lalani is talking about overcoming an unexpected hurdle, as addressing localization based issues threatens to dominate the operator’s build up to Russia 2018.“Isn’t localization just translating some sentences?” Would you believe I actually uttered those words to my Localization Manager? In my defence that was probably seven years ago, and I have learned a lot since then. Wherever you are Alessandra, I am sorry I didn’t get what you were trying to drum into my thick skull. It’s kind of hard to overstate the importance of localization, quite simply because it touches (or it should touch) almost every facet of the customer facing experience. Contrary to my brilliant analysis of seven years ago, localization is far from just translating words. In fact, the actual translation is probably the simplest part of the localization process. Now I am not going to sit here and pretend to be an expert, but I can say with certainty that there are some localization-based issues that are turning into the hurdle that I never anticipated. Addressing those issues have turned into a big priority for us.As evidenced by last month’s ICE/LAC shows, when an operator is discussing partnerships with either vendors or potential partners, the conversation invariably comes to compliance. It’s then I can stick my chest out proudly and say BetRegal.com is licensed through our software provider and holds licences in Curacao, Malta, UK and Denmark. The problem is although we technically have a Denmark licence (or at least have a nice easy path to get there through our software providers licensing model), BetRegal.com doesn’t offer a Danish language version of the site yet.The process of localization involves so much more than just presenting a Danish translated version of the site. It would be easy for us to get a proper contextual translated version of the site. That’s a very simple process and could probably be done in a few days. The problem is what happens when a Danish customer contacts us to ask for help? We don’t offer any Danish support. How do we promote the brand for Danish customers? Do we have any idea what competitors are doing in Denmark and the Scandinavian region? Are we even sure we know who the big players in that market are? Who are the fastest growers in terms of active players in that market? What is the mobile penetration % like in that market? Do we offer the necessary products required to convert these customers? So many questions.Speaking of products, we are also experiencing localization challenges in our most popular market, the UK. BetRegal.com prides itself on being a quality, localized book for our valued UK customers. In most cases, I think we do a fairly good job of that. However, with one of the biggest racing weekends coming up, the Cheltenham Festival, we don’t feel as though our horse racing product is quite up to satisfying the needs of our UK customers. We realize that horses are a very important product to the UK market and we need to ensure we are providing a high quality, regal-type horse product. As BetRegal.com begins to expand our market focus, it’s becoming obvious that we need to have our European offices sorted out quickly. Establishing a European base of operations will allow us to source the required support roles necessary to say with confidence that we are ‘targeting a market’.Localization challenges are especially problematic because most times there are no easy fixes. Some elements are surely easier than others but localization isn’t an either/or game. It’s more all or nothing. All customer touchpoints must work in unison to provide an engaging, localized customer experience or else it becomes a pointless exercise. We have defined a ‘localization priority’ list of tasks and will now look to tackle them with some level of urgency. Why the urgency you ask? Well, I just looked at my calendar (who we kidding, I asked Siri) and realized that we are just 100 days from the start of the World Cup!Is it just me, or is that coming awfully fast.last_img read more

Custom Group delves into football sponsorship with Parma deal

first_img StumbleUpon Highlight Games secures IIHF deal with Infront April 6, 2020 Submit Share Share Parma’s sentimental Serie A return saved despite sanctions July 24, 2018 Related Articles SPFL agrees international media rights deal with Swiss agency August 31, 2018 For its new football sponsorship, the Custom Group has chosen to partner with sports marketing agency Infront, a firm that manages a portfolio of international agencies and is specialises in sports sponsorships, event management, media rights distribution and production.Already sponsoring MotoGP and volleyball with LCR Honda and Top Volley Latina respectively, the group is aiming to increase its brand visibility and establish a major dialogue with the geographical area and target audience. “Communicating really means sharing and putting something in common with others,” said Alessandro Mastropasqua, Communication Manager of Custom S.p.A. “For this reason, we chose specifically to start with Parma, the location of our headquarters, to present developed solutions throughout the world. The project began from a desire to create awareness among the wider public, as well as opinion leaders and operators in the sports industry, regarding the Group’s technology, which is right before everyone’s eyes.”“We all encounter the Custom Group’s Italian technology very often in our daily lives, without realizing it: a receipt or ticket, at the coffee bar counter or supermarket checkout, when making an ATM withdrawal or feeding a parking space meter, a train ticket, gaming receipt or bill payment, a ticket for the cinema, theatre or museum, etc. “The Custom Group is behind all these situations, providing hardware, software and service solutions. We also have over 10 years of expertise in sport, providing hardware solutions for ticketing management for events and international teams around the world.”“The main purpose of these important sponsorships,” states Carlo Stradi, President of Custom S.p.A, “is to share and present the technological solutions that we provide for diverse but synergistic markets: therefore, it’s not just brand awareness, but a sharing of goals, feelings and values… Only in this way can you achieve success and create a new technological culture.“We have begun a journey with Infront. Starting from the Parma sponsorship, we aim to present our technology and solutions already existing throughout the world, which are ready to bring added value also to the world of football”.The format chosen for the sponsorship is based on pitch perimeter visibility and the presence of the Group’s guests at the stadium; pure exposure of the Custom brand in the first and second rows, together with the opportunity to present the products of our young consumer division, Custom Life, through LED perimeter displays. The group’s hardware and software technology will also be a key feature in some sports venues, bringing a true “digital innovation” led by Infront, which is working on specific projects that have chosen Custom Group technology to catapult new technologies/services directly into Italian sports venues, following a trend already present and appreciated overseas.last_img read more

Neil McArthur praises ‘demonstrable progress’ in combatting problem gambling

first_imgShare Gambling.com maintains momentum against COVID-19 impacts August 19, 2020 UKGC launches fourth National Lottery licence competition August 28, 2020 StumbleUpon Submit Share Winning Post: A tale of three reports for UK betting July 6, 2020 Related Articles The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) CEO Neil McArthur has praised the ‘encouraging increase’ of gambling operators which are utilising both algorithms and machine learning to crack down on gambling related harms.Speaking at the Southbank Centre yesterday, McArthur confirmed that the UKGC plans to launch its next Raising Standards Conference early next year, however called for a bi-annual meeting of CEOs from the gambling industry to ‘keep track of progress, issues and opportunities.’The UKGC CEO explained that there has been ‘demonstrable progress’ in ‘markers of harm, customer interaction, affordability checks.’McArthur commented: “There has been an encouraging increase in the number of operators investing in and developing algorithms and machine learning to identify customers who may be experiencing harm.“We have also seen increasing numbers of operators evaluating the effectiveness of their identification tools and customer interaction processes.”Alongside the launch of the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms in April of this year, it was emphasised that industry leaders must continue to remain ‘active’ in enforcing the measures. He added: “In the last few weeks we have seen some encouraging steps taken by the industry: The announcement about increased commitments to RET are welcome; and the announcement that Lord Chadlington will oversee an independent committee to review where the money should be spent is also welcome.“But we need these initiatives to be properly coordinated and fit under the strategy, otherwise good intentions and significant increases in funding will not deliver the outcome we all want, which is: Better prevention and education, Better treatment and support. The use of technology in combating problem gambling was a large focus of McArthur’s address at Southbank, as he urged the industry to ‘build on and accelerate’ the work that has already been done.He said: “We know the technology capability exists to facilitate a single consumer view and making that work would significantly enhance player safety.“We want to build on and accelerate the work that has already taken place, by holding a collaborative ‘tech sprint’ bringing together the gambling industry, tech providers, data scientist, academics, researchers, financial services providers and the Commission to plan a way forward.“We need your organisations to step forward to provide the right resource from your companies – leadership, financial, technical expertise, data, to make this happen.“Where we can we will support you in kick starting this work but where we see a lack of commitment and failure to meet standards, we will continue to be firm.“If we work together I am sure we can make gambling fairer and safer.”last_img read more
