Canada warnings about meds should be more consistent with other countries prof

first_imgVANCOUVER — A University of British Columbia professor says Health Canada needs to be more consistent with other countries when it comes to issuing warnings about the safety risks of certain medications, especially if other countries have already advised patients taking the same drugs.Barbara Mintzes is the lead investigator of a new study and says that between 2007 and 2016, Health Canada issued safety warnings for only 50 per cent of drug-safety issues identified in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. She joined researchers in analyzing 1,441 advisories over that period and found regulators in all four countries were only consistent in the decision to warn their populations 10 per cent of the time regarding issues with the same medication. The affiliate associate professor at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health is also calling on Health Canada to be more transparent in providing patients with easily accessible online information about adverse reactions involving various drugs.Health Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The study is published in JAMA Internal Medicine, published by the American Medical Association, and also involves researches from York University in Toronto and the University of Sydney in Australia. Shaw announces mass voluntary buyout program to 6500 employees

TORONTO — Shaw Communications Inc. has launched a voluntary buyout program aimed at 6,500 employees, including those at Freedom Mobile, as part of efforts to use more technology to manage the company’s operations. The Calgary-based company — which owns Canada’s second-largest cable TV operation and the country’s fourth-largest mobile phone service — has sent notices to the targeted staff and expects about 10 per cent to take the offer. The voluntary program will be open until Feb. 14. Details of the severance offers weren’t announced.‘It feels like a new business’: Shaw underestimated iPhone impact on Freedom Mobile, hints at major growthShaw Communications reports $114 million profit, adds 34,000 wireless subscribersWill Freedom Mobile shake up the wireless market? We’re about to find outShaw said its job cuts are part of a multi-year initiative that will help it succeed amid technological changes — both internally at the operational level and externally in a rapidly changing and intensely competitive marketplace.Among other updates, Shaw plans to make more use of online and smartphone apps to provide customer service, and provide more self-installed services, the company said Tuesday.“Our agents in contact centres and our technicians will still be able to deal with more complex questions and situations, but we are committed to listening better to our customers and changing our operating model to better suit their preferences for service when they want and how they want it,” Shaw president Jay Mehr said in a statement.“We know our future success will require us to become a leaner, more integrated, and more agile workforce, which will result in many internal changes taking place as we move towards becoming a digital-by-default organization.”During the company’s most recent quarterly conference call with analysts, Mehr told analysts that the arrival of Apple products for the first time at Freedom — which has been updating its network to handle the iPhone — has transformed Shaw’s wireless business.“It does feel like a new business, starting in December,” Mehr said on Jan. 11.Shaw bought Freedom Mobile in 2016, transforming Shaw into the country’s fourth-largest wireless company, and recently told employees of plans to close a unionized call centre in Windsor, Ont., resulting in the loss of about 130 jobs.Since 2016, Shaw has concentrated on telecommunications. It sold the Global television network and some specialty TV channels to Corus Communications in return for cash and shares. While Shaw now owns a 38 per cent stake in Toronto-based Corus, they remain separate publicly-traded companies — both controlled by the founding Shaw family through its class A shares. read more

Commentary Ohio State mens basketballs affinity for defense keeping Final Four dreams

Hey, you! Yes, you, right there, Joe/Jane Buckeye fan. You go here because of the football team, right? I know, I know, we all do. It’s OK. School is secondary. And, let me guess, since you go to Ohio State because of Buckeye football, you probably have a special affinity for defense. Brutal, violent, aggressive, stingy defense. Beautiful defense. And, let me surmise, you look at the basketball team, with its inconsistent offense and those four losses and think: “Hey, it’s only, like, eight months until Urban Meyer unleashes his freshly non-bowl banned OSU football team on the rest of the country.” Stop it right now. It’s not August yet. It’s basketball season. It’s Big Ten basketball season. And your Buckeyes are playing a brand of basketball I know you can appreciate. They’re playing basketball with a football mentality. They’re playing brutal, violent, aggressive, stingy defense. Beautiful defense. Football defense. Jared Sullinger is gone. William Buford is gone. The Buckeyes’ elite offensive abilities are gone too, and it’s showing. Against elite teams, OSU’s offense has sputtered for long stretches. The Buckeyes have made 3-point shooting look as difficult as solving a Rubik’s cube in less than 30 seconds (if only junior guard Aaron Craft could do the former as well as the latter) and they lack a go-to second scorer (Craft? Sophomore forward LaQuinton Ross? Junior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr.? Brutus Buckeye?) behind the offensive genius that is junior forward Deshaun Thomas. Where would OSU be without Thomas? Hint: somewhere losing a lot of games by 20.5 points. But guess what? It doesn’t matter that OSU is trying to set offensive basketball back to the peach basket days of Dr. James Naismith, the game’s creator. The team’s defense is good. Like, Final Four good. Don’t give up on them. Craft is and has been the NCAA’s preeminent perimeter defender since he stepped on campus in 2010. He smothers guards. His scalp list the last three years reads like a “Who’s Who” of college basketball: Trey Burke, Jordan Taylor, Dion Waiters, Scoop Jardine, Tyshawn Taylor, Brandon Knight, Seth Curry, Erving Walker and the list goes on. Point blank, he’s OSU redshirt sophomore cornerback Bradley Roby in sneakers. His competitors know by pregame they’re going to wear a Craft coat for the next 40 minutes. Craft’s partner-in-crime, sophomore guard Shannon Scott, averages a hair under two steals per game and plays passing lanes like a seasoned veteran. Smith Jr., is a hulking 6-foot-4 menace who can physically overpower smaller foes. Sophomore forward Sam Thompson is a weak-side shot-blocking terror with staggering athleticism and a 476-foot vertical leap (approximately). If someone manages to penetrate the lane against OSU’s guards, 6-foot-11 sophomore center Amir Williams lurks in the paint ready to send any shot all the way back to his hometown in Detroit. Any way you slice it, the Buckeyes’ top-20 scoring defense (out of 345 teams) gives them a chance to win any game, despite the offense’s struggles. Hmmm, actually that sounds familiar. Wait, are we sure Jim Tressel isn’t coaching basketball? Don’t write off this season just yet. Sure, the offense might not be Sweet 16 worthy (or outside of Thomas, even RPAC worthy) but the defense is Final Four caliber. It might not be pretty, but the basketball Buckeyes are taking a page out of Woody Hayes’ playbook and embracing a new, defense-first identity. As football fans, it shouldn’t be hard for us to do the same. read more

More Lagarde list proof sought

first_imgThe Supreme Court has asked for the memory stick containing the so-called Lagarde list to be investigated for electronic traces that might reveal when it was tampered with and by whom as former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou publicly denied accusations that he had removed the names of three of his relatives from the list.In a document sent to the two financial prosecutors investigating the list, the court’s vice prosecutor Nikos Pantelis asked them to hand over the USB stick to the head of the police’s electronic crimes squad, noting that several press reports had noted that the squad has the ability to determine the exact date and time that the stick was tampered with and from which computer the intervention was carried out, which would help authorities to identify the perpetrator. The development came just a few hours after Papaconstantinou sought to defend himself in his first interview since the coalition government called for him to face a parliamentary investigation. In an interview with state TV channel NET late on Monday, Papaconstantinou admitted to making mistakes in handling the Lagarde list but denied tampering with it and said he had been unaware that the names of three of his relatives had been on the list.Financial prosecutors are on Wednesday expected to hear explanations from the relatives – a first cousin of Papaconstantinou, her husband and the spouse of another cousin of the ex-minister. It is possible that the trio will submit explanations about their bank accounts to the prosecutors in writing. The prosecutors are also expected to summon aides of the ex-minister for questioning and to recall two former chiefs of the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE), Yiannis Diotis and Yiannis Kapeleris, for additional testimony soon.In a related development, SDOE on Tuesday announced that it had asked banks to provide the details of 6,000 Greeks as part of its ongoing investigation into tax evasion and money laundering.Parliament is set to vote in the next few days on whether to set up an inquiry to investigate Papaconstantinou but the process was complicated Tuesday when the Independent Greeks proposed that other political figures should be probed as well. The right-wing party called for Papaconstantinou’s successor at the Finance Ministry, PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, and former prime ministers George Papandreou and Lucas Papademos to answer MPs’ questions. Neofascist party Golden Dawn said it would support the proposal.SYRIZA has already submitted a request for Papaconstantinou and Venizelos to be investigated by a parliamentary committee. The latest proposal means that the vote will be delayed slightly as parliamentary rules require those who face possible inquiries to have seven days to prepare their speeches ahead of MPs voting.Tuesday’s developments mean that lawmakers will have to decide which of the three proposals to vote for (the coalition suggests that just Papaconstantinou should be investigated) some time next week. For a proposal to be adopted, it needs a majority of votes in the 300-seat Parliament. Sources said it is likely that ballot boxes bearing the names of each of the four politicians named in the proposals will be set up and that those gathering more than 150 votes will be probed by a committee consisting of 12 deputies.SYRIZA stepped up its attacks on the government Tuesday, accusing Prime Minister Antonis Samaras specifically of attempting to cover up the Lagarde list affair. “From the prime minister’s stance and actions, it appears that the effort to cover up and protect can be attributed to one person: Antonis Samaras,” Tsipras told his party’s lawmakers.“The prime minister is protecting those who placed the Lagarde list in their drawers,” added the leftist leader in a broadside at Venizelos, before he accused the coalition of taking an oath of silence over the list.Venizelos responded by accusing SYRIZA of “old-style leftism.” In a reference to a squat recently raided by police in central Athens, the PASOK leader said SYRIZA’s proposal was similar to “proclamations written in Villa Amalia.”Source; Kathimerini Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more

Winding Stream gets big showcase at festival

first_img“The Winding Stream” won’t be Beth Harrington’s first film to premiere at the renowned South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, but it will be the biggest. That’s because the Vancouver documentary filmmaker’s work on country music icons will play to a much larger audience at the music and film showcase, which has been growing as relentlessly as Johnny Cash’s guitar rhythms on “Folsom Prison.”“South by Southwest in the last two years or so has just exploded,” Harrington said. “And it isn’t just a film festival, it’s also a music festival, so it’s a better fit all around for me.”Her film, about the Cash and Carter families, will debut at the event, which runs from March 7 to 16, then hit the film festival circuit this spring and summer, she said.“Now that it’s got the South by Southwest stamp on it, it’s a lot easier to get it into other festivals,” Harrington said.last_img read more

Microsofts Xbox One data center in Iowa will cost 677 million

first_imgMicrosoft has now reversed its plans to require an Internet connection for the Xbox One to function. Used games lending and trading also won’t require management via Microsoft’s cloud-based licensing transfer system. That would suggest Microsoft won’t see the same demand on its Xbox Live servers as previously anticipated because regular connections are no longer mandatory, but that hasn’t stopped them investing heavily in the cloud.Late last week it was announced that Microsoft was the company behind Project Mountain — a planned $677 million investment in a West Des Moines, Iowa data center. The reason for the investment? To primarily support Xbox Live and Office 365.That’s very good news for gamers who intend to pick up the Xbox One on launch day. You may remember the pain gamers went through when the Wii U was launched and required a day one patch. It took hours and left your brand new console unusable during the process. Microsoft is planning a similar system update at launch, and it will also have to support game activations, meaning its Xbox Live servers will be kept very busy 24/7 for the first few weeks at least. The investment also points to Microsoft’s continued focus on cloud-based services for its next-gen console. Microsoft wants the Xbox One to be your entertainment hub hooked up to HDMI1, overlaying content from your cable box, offering a growing range of streaming services, as well as pushing download games and the multiplayer features of the console. All of those require a reliable and fast connection to the cloud.last_img read more

BJP Modi speaking about religion which is not Hinduism

first_imgIslampur: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee said Hindusthan will be set up through the Lok Sabha election and not Modisthan or BJPsthan. She was addressing a rally here on Tuesday afternoon.Banerjee said Modi and BJP are talking about a religion which is not Hinduism. “Hinduism talks about tolerance and acceptance and they are talking about hatred. In the name of preservation of cows, many people have been lynched. They are spreading hatred everywhere. This Hindusthan is Modisthan and BJPsthan. We do not want this. We want a Hindusthan where people will live peacefully and there will be communal harmony and peace,” she said, adding: “BJP is inciting one religion against the other and in the name of religion, they have unleashed a reign of terror. We want to come out of this,” she maintained. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataReferring to Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah as Duryodhan and Dushshashan, she said: “The duo has come to destroy the social fabric in our country. Never in the past have I seen so much hatred and disrespect for others. This is not Indian tradition. Indians are respected for their tolerant views.” Banerjee said the SC, ST, minorities and dalits will vote against Modi. “The SCs, STs and Dalits have been tortured in different areas. In Jharkhand, they have been thrown out from their land. In Uttar Pradesh and Assam, Muslims have been tortured by BJP workers and the state governments do not take any action against them,” she said. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in state”They should first see the law and order situation in their own states before commenting on the situation in Bengal. They come to Bengal to disturb the areas. They incite the people living in the hills against those living in the plains to win elections,” Banerjee added. The Trinamool supremo said demonetisation has affected poor people and farmers badly. “Over two crore people have lost their jobs and 12,000 farmers have committed suicide after failing to pay loans. People have stood in long queues to withdraw their own money from the banks. Modi had said note ban will stop circulation of money among terrorists, but in reality terrorist attacks have been the highest during Modi’s time,” she said. Banerjee questioned why no action was taken to save the lives of the jawans in Pulwama despite prior information, adding: “It’s a matter of shame for BJP that its leaders are talking about the achievements of the Army in its election speeches.” “Just as Ma Durga had killed Asura, the women of the country will vote against BJP to oust Modi and set up a secular pro-development government,” she said.last_img read more

Hacker duo hijacks thousands of Chromecasts and Google smart TVs to play

first_imgOn Wednesday, a hacker duo hijacked thousands of Google’s Chromecast streaming adapters, Google Home smart speakers and smart TVs with built-in Chromecast technology to play a video urging users to subscribe to Swedish Youtuber ‘PewDiePie’s’ Youtube channel. The hacked smart TV’s also displayed a message on the similar lines. The hackers behind this hacking campaign –codenamed CastHack– are known on Twitter as TheHackerGiraffe and j3ws3r. The attack took advantage of badly configured routers to find streaming devices exposed to the public internet. Once found, the hackers renamed the device’s Wi-Fi name, and then played a PewDiePie Youtube video. A website detailing the hack lists the statistics on the number of devices forced to play the video, total renamed devices, total exposed devices and much more. The website shared some of the information the hackers had access to, including “what WIFI your Chromecast/Google Home is connected to, what bluetooth devices it has paired to, how long it’s been on, what WiFi networks your device remembers, what alarms you have set, and much more.” However, they state that “We’re only trying to protect you and inform you of this before someone takes real advantage of it. Imagine the consequences of having access to the information above.” They further added that  “We want to help you, and also our favorite Youtubers (mostly PewDiePie)’. According to Variety, the attack was part of a marketing campaign- “Subscribe to PewDiePie”-that fans of the Swedish video-game streamer and vlogger have been engaged in since late last year. The goal of that campaign is to defeat the Indian Youtube channel T-Series for the title of ‘Youtube’s most popular channel’ by gaining more subscribers than the latter. How did the attack take place? The attack exploited a Chromecast bug allegedly ignored by Google for almost five years. According to ZDNet, the ongoing CastHack takes advantage of users who use incorrectly configured routers that have the UPnP (Universal Plug’n’Play) service enabled, a service which forwards specific ports from the internal network on the Internet. The ports are 8008, 8009, and 8443, normally used by smart TVs, Chromecasts, and Google Home for various management functions. The streaming devices expose these ports on internal networks, where users can operate them by sending commands from their smartphones or computers to the devices for remote management purposes. Routers with incorrectly configured UPnP settings make these ports available on the internet. This allowed FriendlyH4xx0r to scan the entire internet for devices with these ports exposed. Once devices are identified, the hacker said another script renames the devices to “HACKED_SUB2PEWDS_#” and then tries to autoplay a video (now taken down by Youtube) to promote PewDiePie’s channel. A Google spokesperson, told Variety via email: “To restrict the ability for external videos to be played on their devices, users can turn off Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Please note that turning off UPnP may disable some devices (e.g. printers, game consoles, etc.) that depend on it for local device discovery.” This is the second time that HackerGiraffe and j3ws3r have teamed up to promote PewDiePie’s channel. Both said they were behind a hack in November that forced printers around the world to print out sheets of paper telling people to subscribe to PewDiePie. Nicosia expects momentum on Cyprus talks after Greek elections

first_imgNicosia’s assessment is that, based on contacts with the UN, after the Greek elections, a new impetus will be given to the attempt to resume Cyprus talks, Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides said in an interview with Kathimerini on Sunday.According to the Cyprus News Agency, the minister said the ideas for a resumption of talks put forward by President Nicos Anastasiades to the UN, aim at resolving issues of disagreement and do not go beyond the framework of a bizonal bicommunal federation.“Any effort to get out of this solution framework will be the most negative for the prospects of our country’s reunification,” Christodoulides was quoted as saying.“So the president’s ideas, such as a parliamentary system of government, are to investigate how the disagreements at the negotiating table can be resolved and the process moved forward.”At the same time, Christodoulides noted that if they did not want the Cyprus problem solved, he would just say so. “It’s simple to say no. The point is to create the conditions to be able to say yes and that’s the hard part,” he added.Christodoulides also referred to the ongoing debate in the EU as regards Turkish activities in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and what measures could be taken against Ankara.“We are now in the process of drafting the options, and the member states will decide by choosing the appropriate measures,” he said.He said the options would likely be scaled depending on developments, and implementation would be gradual “since the goal is not the perpetuation of the measures, but the measures are to stop the illegal actions and create the conditions for resuming the talks.”On the proposals regarding the fenced-off city of Varosha in Famagusta put forward by Turkish Cypriot ‘foreign minister’, Kudret Ozersay, Christodoulides said the latter was just aiming to kick-start his 2020 election bid against Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.“At the same time, I believe that the ‘crisis’ caused by the Famagusta issue could, under certain conditions, serve as an opportunity. If, then, there is a positive response from Mr Akinci to the President’s proposal to set up a technical committee for Famagusta, which I personally think should consist of both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriots from Varosha, who can prepare a study on the rebuilding of the city. This would be the best message to send, not only to Mr Ozersay, but also to those who do not want a solution to the Cyprus problem or are thinking of a solution beyond a bizonal, bicommunal federation,” he said. You May LikeCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityReassurance for your refugeCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoPensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoCypriot tycoon launches ‘Bank of Cannabis’Undoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more
