They say they are investigating a photograph of Nazi paraphernalia allegedly sent by Schmegelsky to another user on a video game network. Schmegelsky is also pictured in military fatigues brandishing an airsoft rifle and wearing a gas mask.July 28 — RCMP descend on York Landing, an isolated community southwest of Gillam, after it’s reported the suspects were seen at the local dump.July 29 — RCMP are unable to confirm the sighting and pull back to Gillam.July 31 — Police announce they have done everything they can and are scaling back the search, although not ending it.Aug. 2 — RCMP say they found a damaged rowboat on the Nelson River.Aug. 4 — RCMP dive team conducts underwater search “of significant areas of interest.”Aug. 6 — RCMP say they have found several items linked to Schmegelsky and McLeod on the shore of the Nelson River in northern Manitoba. The Mounties would not disclose what the items are but say they were found nine kilometres from the vehicle they were driving.Aug. 7 — Police say they believe they have found the bodies of McLeod and Schmegelsky in dense brush in northern Manitoba. RCMP Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy said the bodies were found earlier in the morning near the shoreline of the Nelson River, within a kilometre of where several items linked to the two suspects were found. Autopsies are scheduled to confirm their identities. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Côte dIvoire UN mission urges prompt resumption of voter registration

The United Nations Mission in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) today called for a prompt resumption of voter registration to allow for broad participation in the November presidential elections. UNOCI spokesman Hamadoun Toure told reporters in Abidjan that the Mission “stresses the importance of a strong commitment to expedite the remaining tasks for organizing free, fair and transparent elections in the country.”Of primary importance, he said, was the opening or re-opening of hundreds of closed registration centres and the recovery of documentation damaged in disturbances. Last Thursday Prime Minister Guillaume Soro announced 29 November as the date for the long-delayed election. Welcoming the announcement, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged “all Ivorian parties to respect this date and to work together to complete the remaining tasks related to the electoral process,” in a statement issued by his spokesperson. The elections have been repeatedly postponed, most recently in December of 2008.Mr. Toure said UNOCI specifically encourages all parties to the ballot to begin registration, help in the publication of provisional electoral lists, confirm voter lists, print and distribute electoral materials and consolidate the legal framework for the electoral campaign and the organization of presidential elections themselves. He added that UNOCI was committed to helping the process. The Mission has been providing technical and logistical support for preparations for the elections, including in areas such as voter identification and registration. Some 6 million voters had been registered, or about 70 per cent of the country’s eligible voter pool. 21 May 2009The United Nations Mission in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) today called for a prompt resumption of voter registration to allow for broad participation in the November presidential elections. read more

UN chief and US Secretary of State discuss preparations for Iraqs elections

The two also discussed Middle East reform, Haiti, Sudan, Afghanistan and UN reform, and held a brief one-on-one encounter, according to a spokesman for the world body.Afterward during a press encounter, the Secretary-General said the United Nations will put in the staff in Iraq it deems necessary. “It’s not a question of numbers. It’s a question of what you need to get the job done,” said Mr. Annan, who also met today with US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. The UN currently has some 220 people in Baghdad serving with the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) – 157 Fijian guards providing security for UN premises and personnel and 64 international staff, up from a previous ceiling of 59.Another 70 UNAMI international staff are based in Amman, Jordan, and in Kuwait. Electoral staff from the Mission inside and outside Iraq are part of an integrated team of some 50 international electoral experts from the UN, European Union and other organizations operating under UN coordination. The UN has helped to train 6,000 elections workers, opened 450 voter registration centres and recruited and trained up to 130,000 poll workers in preparation for the elections scheduled for 30 January.Meanwhile, yesterday was the last day for political entities to register in the run-up to the elections and the certification of their candidate lists. The latest figures show 237 political entities have signed up – with none rejected so far, translating to more than 11,000 candidates running for the elections.A UN spokesman in New York said the entities reflect a broad spectrum of Iraqi society, with all religious and ethnic groups represented. “Some of the candidate lists include representatives from other tribes and minority religious sects, showing that groups are using the electoral process to form alliances and attract wide support,” Stephane Dujarric told reporters. The Secretary-General will travel later today to Brussels to attend the European Union summit on Friday. read more

CMHC gave Maple Bank green light shortly before banking watchdog seized banks

by Alexandra Posadzki, The Canadian Press Posted Aug 18, 2016 2:00 am MDT Last Updated Aug 18, 2016 at 7:20 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email CMHC gave Maple Bank green light shortly before banking watchdog seized bank’s assets TORONTO – Canada’s national housing agency gave Maple Bank GmbH’s Canadian branch the green light during a financial review, just one month before the federal banking watchdog seized the company’s assets amid a German tax investigation, documents show.Documents obtained by The Canadian Press through an access-to-information request show that the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reviewed Maple Bank GmbH’s status as an issuer of mortgage-backed securities and a seller of Canada Mortgage Bonds in January 2016.At the time, CMHC’s so-called operations support division said it was “comfortable” maintaining Maple Bank’s status, the documents show. The housing agency was aware of the German bank’s dispute with authorities, which had been ongoing for about four years, according to the documents.A month after the financial review, Canada’s federal banking regulator announced it was taking temporary control of the Canadian branch’s assets in light of the news that German banking regulator BaFin was shuttering the bank after a tax dispute threatened its financial stability.Maple Bank is headquartered in Frankfurt but has a Toronto branch where its main business was securitization, securities financing and structured secured wholesale lending. On Feb. 11, an insolvency administrator was appointed in Germany to handle the windup of the bank’s operations. The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, Canada’s banking watchdog, announced on Feb. 15 that it was making its temporary control of Maple Bank’s assets permanent. The following day, the Ontario Superior Court granted a winding-up order with respect to Maple’s Canadian branch and appointed KPMG as the liquidator. A winding-up order is a court order that forces an insolvent company into compulsory liquidation. When asked why CMHC was comfortable with maintaining Maple Bank’s status as an issuer of securities even though it was aware of the ongoing German tax probe, the federal agency said it does not disclose details of its internal assessments.“CMHC has a rigorous process to assess participants in its securitization programs,” the agency said in an emailed statement.“This includes the daily monitoring and evaluation of both public and non-public information to assess its risks, including the risk of loss due to the failure of any counterparty. CMHC’s securitization programs are structured to minimize the risk of loss if a party were to fail.”A spokesperson added that CMHC does not expect to incur any losses stemming from Maple Bank’s failure.Maple Bank did not return requests for comment. The insolvency of Maple Bank GmbH also prompted CMHC to undertake a review of another issuer, according to the documents, although the entity’s name is redacted. When asked for more details on that review, CMHC said it “regularly reviews all issuers and assesses any events that may impact them.”The federal agency declined to identify the entity under review or provide any further details.———Follow @alexposadzki on Twitter read more

Now, they’ll be able to earn cybersecurity skills badges, thanks to Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).On Thursday, HPE announced a new cybersecurity curriculum and game that teaches young girls about internet safety.Introduced in partnership with Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital, the program aims to help Junior Girl Scouts, who range in age from 9-years-old to 11-years-old, safely engage in online activities. Once they complete the program, Girl Scouts can proudly sport a cybersecurity badge that features a laptop, security lock, and the official Girl Scouts logo.Photo Credit: Girl Scouts Nation’s CapitalThe cybersecurity curriculum will cover four key areas: Personal information and digital footprint, cyberbullying, privacy and security, and online safety. According to HPE, only 61 percent of U.S. tweens and teens use social media privacy settings. With the curriculum, Girl Scouts can become more savvy about their digital activities and protect their data from potential hackers.Girl Scout Cyber Squad game. (Photo Credit: HPE)Cyber Squad, the cybersecurity program’s game, is like having a virtual tech classroom: It simulates cybersecurity cyberbullying, phishing, and online safety through role-playing characters and quizzes. The game, which can be played online, will roll out to smartphones later this year.In the game, Girls Scouts and their avatars are placed in real-life digital situations, where they’re asked to assess scenarios throughout a storyline. When players take a step to be more safe with their avatar, they’ll receive virtual cyber patches that they can unlock along the way.“Making basic cybersecurity awareness at a young age is imperative, and as fundamental as safety skills in the physical world, like learning how to cross the street,” Liz Joyce, HPE’s chief information security officer, said in a HPE press release. “Through this collaboration, we hope to arm Girl Scouts with the cybersecurity literacy and knowledge they need to be savvy, secure and safe online, and to empower them to be good digital citizens.”More on Geek.com:Sphoon and Phork Are Eating Meets TweetingPlankk’s Mobile App Lets You Workout With Top Fitness InfluencersThese Ocean Robots Spent a Year Collecting Data Under Antarctic Icelast_img read more

Nonprofits may lose tax exemption

first_imgUnited States Bowling Congress, are you still knocking ’em down? Still hoping, Hope for Tomorrow? Columbia River Organ Club, do you still play? If so, you need to let the federal government know right away — or you could lose your federal tax exemption.Jeanne Kojis, executive director of the Nonprofit Network of Southwest Washington, has sent a couple of e-mail blasts to as many of these small nonprofit groups as she has contact information for — but that’s not all of them. She’s trying to spread the word that IRS rules are changing, and that many of the smallest tax-exempt organizations — which haven’t needed to file taxes, register their status or otherwise stay in touch with the government for years — are up against a May 17 deadline. All that’s required, for those with annual revenues of less than $25,000, is the filing of a simple “e-postcard” version of IRS form 990-N by May 17. Larger organizations must file a standard 990 or 990-EZ form. To file, visit http://epostcard.form990.org.Nonprofits that miss the deadline could lose their federal tax-exempt status — meaning they couldn’t accept tax-deductible donations or apply for foundation grants, Kojis said. And re-upping can take a stack of paperwork and cost $750 or more, she said.“It takes months,” Kojis said. “You don’t want to go through that pain again.”Especially vulnerable are mom-and-pop charitable operations and volunteer entities with shifting casts of characters, she said.“Very small groups where records and even the knowledge of what they need to do to comply with the law gets passed along from volunteer to volunteer, they really ought to take a look at the list,” she said. “This thing is not well-known.”last_img read more

Sahara Investors can Apply for Refunds by 30 September Says SEBI

first_imgThe Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has released a new application form for Sahara’s investors, who can apply for refunds of their investments by 30 September. The measure is applicable for those investors who have invested in various bonds issued by two Sahara firms – Sahara India Real Estate Corp. Ltd (SIREL) and Sahara Housing Investment Corp. (SHICL).The Supreme Court had ordered SEBI to facilitate refunds to the bondholders of the Sahara firms, which has been tangled in a long-running dispute involving raising of funds worth over ₹24,000 crore from nearly 30 million investors across the country.”There has to be a finality to these things…we have been making attempts for some time now, and only 3,000-3,500 investors have come forward,” Business Standard quoted an SEBI official.Meanwhile, Sahara said that it has already repaid more than 93 percent of the outstanding dues directly to the concerned shareholders and the remaining amount was just about ₹2,500 crore, reported PTI.The company added that it deposited ₹5,120 crore with SEBI in December 2012 towards the investor refunds as per Supreme Court orders. An amount of ₹3,117 crore was also deposited with SEBI by the group in June this year. The regulator began its process of refunding the money to eligible investors from the amount deposited by the group in May last year and also issued public notices to claim refund.SEBI has now issued a new public notice inviting bondholders of the two Sahara firms to submit refund applications along with ID proof and residential proof to refund the amount directly into the account of bondholders.”Please note that claims relating to any schemes/bonds other than the ones listed above shall not be entertained and will be returned to the applicant at his/her sole risk and responsibility,” SEBI said.Subrata Roy, the Sahara chief has been held in Delhi’s Tihar jail since 4 March along with his group of directors Ravi Shankar Dubey and Ashok Roy Choudhary. The court had earlier granted conditional bail to Roy against a payment of ₹10,000 crore, to be paid half in cash and rest half in bank guarantees. However, the company failed to deposit the amount.last_img read more

Pale Moon 27 changes announced

first_imgPale Moon 27 changes announced by Martin Brinkmann on October 27, 2016 in Internet – Last Update: June 26, 2017 – 54 commentsThe Pale Moon team is working on Pale Moon 27 currently, the next version of the popular web browser that shares code with Firefox. As you may know, the Pale Moon team uses a different versioning scheme than Mozilla as it ups the integer part (characteristic) of the version only when major versions are released, and otherwise only the fractional-part (mantissa). So, an upgrade from Pale Moon 26.x to 27.0 is a major update in many regards, while the same cannot be said for Firefox version upgrades as the integer-part increases on a regular basis regardless of what the update brings along with it.Pale Moon 27Pale Moon 27 is currently available as a beta release. Anyone interested can download it from the WIP page for 32-bit or 64-bit versions of windows or Linux. The team plans to release Pale Moon 27 in November if development progresses along nicely.A new forum post on the official Pale Moon forum by Moonchild, the head of the Pale Moon team, lists some of the upcoming changes of the new browser version. Most changes are positive, and there are only a few changes that can be seen as negative but only for a limited number of users.Pale Moon 27 will drop support for Windows XP and Server 2003.The new engine and platform simply isn’t geared to handle the ancient NT5 kernel and APIs any longer. What was previously still possible with a special compatibility build, can’t be done anymore. The Atom hardware version, one option for XP users to continue using Pale Moon, won’t be made available as well anymore. This means that Pale Moon 27 won’t run on Windows XP or Server 2003 systems.Another change that is affecting some users is that Pale Moon 27 will only be available in English initially. The team notes that previous translations and language packs won’t work, but that localization will be made available at a later point in time. Also, some complete themes of Firefox that worked in the past may not be compatible with the new version of Pale Moon 27.Probably the biggest change of them all is that Pale Moon won’t support Jetpack or add-on SDK extensions any longer.Pale Moon 26.x supported these extensions.Pale Moon 27.0 positive changesAs far as positive changes are concerned, there are quite a few:Pale Moon 27 will offer better JavaScript support in regards to ECMAScript 6 standard compatibility. The rendering engine Goanna is upgraded to version 3.0 introducing support for DirectX 11, Direct2D 1.1 and layout and rendering improvements that go along with that.Pale Moon 27 will ship with improved font features such as support for WOFF2 and better handling of complex font delivery systems. The new version of Pale Moon will support media source extensions (MSE) which improves compatibility with sites using HTML5 video and audio sites. It won’t support encrypted media extensions (EME) on the other hand which means that sites that rely on it cannot stream content to Pale Moon using HTML5 video or audio. Now You: What’s your take on the upcoming Pale Moon 27.0?SummaryArticle NamePale Moon 27 changes announcedDescriptionThe Pale Moon team is working on Pale Moon 27 currently, the next version of the popular web browser that shares code with Firefox.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

Push notification short stories are a thing now thanks to this

first_imgYour smartphone’s notifications might already be clogged with junk, but what about a short story instead?Serial Box, an iOS app for serving up serialized fiction on devices, announced in a blog post that it’s launching something called Microfiction Mondays, starting from Jul. 9.The stories will arrive on your device via push notification in 150 characters or less, and are written by someone from the platform’s pool of writers.“The perfect bite-sized story for a busy afternoon filled with meetings, we hope these will provide a moment of fictional solace for our Serial Boxers,” according to its blog post.“This is one more step in the world of pushing the boundaries and limitations of technology and social to expand on the written word and storytelling, and we are excited to bring you something fresh.” What’s neat, or maybe annoying for some, is that these stories are transient. They won’t live anywhere on the app, meaning if you inadvertently clear your notifications, you won’t see it again. The style might bear resemblance to the short fiction published to Twitter that was a thing for a while, when the platform still had a 140-character limit.[h/t The Verge] Push notification fiction.Image: Serial boxBy Johnny Lieu2018-06-29 04:13:34 UTClast_img read more

Patient transport and the need for floor-mounted rails used in other systems is eliminated, which opens up valuable OR space and allows unimpeded movement of surgical equipment and simplified infection control. In addition, Visius iCT features a suite of software applications such as 3-D volume rendering to aid in surgical planning, and dose reduction, which considers each patient’s unique characteristics to maximize image quality and minimize dose. The system software allows healthcare practitioners to visualize dosage prior to scan and adjust settings based on the specific clinical need with detailed dosage reports produced after each scan. For more information: www.imris.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 Videos | Cardiac Imaging | July 30, 2019 VIDEO: The History of CT Calcium Scoring Arthur Agatston, M.D., clinical pro read more Videos | Computed Tomography (CT) | July 30, 2019 VIDEO: New Advances in CT Imaging Technology Cynthia McColl… read more Video Player is loading.Mahadevappa Mahesh discusses trends in medical physics at the 2019 AAPM meetingPlay VideoPlayMuteCurrent Time 0:00/Duration 4:01Loaded: 4.04%Stream Type LIVESeek to live, currently playing liveLIVERemaining Time -4:01 Playback Rate1xChaptersChaptersDescriptionsdescriptions off, selectedCaptionscaptions settings, opens captions settings dialogcaptions off, selectedAudio Trackdefault, selectedFullscreenThis is a modal window.Beginning of dialog window. Chinese tech companies dont want to hire employees over 30 years of

first_imgIt was just two weeks back when Chinese developers protested over the “996 work schedule”, that requires employees to work from 9 am to 9 pm, 6 days a week in China. And now the news of Chinese tech firms firing employees over the age of 30 is trending. Shelly Banjo, Roving Asia Tech Reporter, at Bloomberg published a post in May last year where she shed light on the grotesque reality of the ageism work culture in China. One such example is of Helen He, a tech recruiter in Shanghai, who has been instructed by her bosses to not hire people over 35 years of age. “Most people in their 30s are married and have to take care of their family—they’re not able to focus on the high-intensity work. If a 35-year-old candidate isn’t seeking to be a manager, a hiring company wouldn’t even give that CV a glance”, said Helen. Ageism within tech firms is at its peak in China and is taking a toll over its employees, as they are forced to move out of the industry. Banjo states that the “30+ middle-age crisis”,  is rife in China. For instance, close to three-quarters of tech workers in China are below thirty in age and the employers further promote this concept. The core reason behind Chinese employers fortifying this practice is because employees over thirty years of age are not considered as efficient as the young. Apart from that, anybody over 30 years old is likely to be experienced and demand a higher wage. Whereas, young employees can be hired at lower wages (as most don’t have a family to look after), contributing to higher profits on the lower scale for the company. Banjo states that China’s 996 work schedule and its hiring young policies reflect China’s obsession with achieving global tech domination. However, the consequences of this obsession are hard-hitting. Banjo gives an example of Ou Jianxin, a 42-year-old, research engineer at ZTE Corp. who committed suicide after he was fired from his role without informing him of the reason. However, after the news went public, people had their suspicions and many blamed it on his age, saying that, he would have already been considered “too old” to be an engineer in China. Another example presented by Banjo is of a job search results on Zhaopin.com that over 10,000 job postings calling for applicants younger than 35. One such job posting is from e-commerce retailer JD.com Inc, which seeks an applicant with a master’s degree for a senior manager position between the age of 20-28. Moreover, although China has national laws that prohibit discrimination based on gender, religion, and disability, there are no laws based on declining someone an offer based on his/her age. “Age-dismissal victims rarely ask for help from lawyers,” says Lu Jun, a social activist and visiting scholar at Fordham University School of Law. But there are some who have fought against the ageism policy. For instance, in 2011 the Shenzhen Stock Exchange had put up a recruitment notice on its website asking for applicants younger than 28. But, the director of a local nonprofit wrote an open letter about this listing to the municipal bureau of human resources, after which the media made the story viral, leading to stock exchange investigating into the listing and taking it down. Others have a different way to fight ageism. One such example presented is of Liu Huai Yi, 33, who was fired from his IT role at Nokia Corp. in Chengdu. Liu says the incident pushed him “to change and improve.. skills to get a better job. I don’t buy the idea that after 35 you can’t get a job. Someone in IT has to just keep learning to keep up.” After a long job search, Liu got another IT job in a multinational healthcare company. However, the ageist policies are not just a part of China’s work culture but have also spread to other parts of the world. For instance, in March 2018, ProPublica conducted an investigation that showed that IBM cut 20,000 older employees in the U.S. over a course of last five years to “sharply increase hiring of people born after 1980.” A user named “duxup” on Hacker News commented, “A little bit like the US maybe? I was already in a technical field, was laid off after a company buyout, I changed careers and took a coding Bootcamp. The other two older guys (at Bootcamp) and I got a lot of “culture” related questions. One dude was actually told by the recruiter that they were worried he was too old, he was surprised they’d actually say it to him so he asked … and the recruiter repeated herself happily”. Another user “jdietrich” commented on Hacker News, “Older workers expect higher wages and are less willing to tolerate unpaid overtime. They’re harder to bullshit with cheap “perks” like foosball tables and beer on Friday. An experienced developer might be better, but who cares when you can get two junior devs for the same price and they’ll work 14 hour days during your quarterly “crunch”? They don’t believe in the 10x developer, they don’t even believe in the 1.1x developer; their employees are just meat in a seat”. Pope speaks to youth alienated by churchs sins

first_imgBrazilian police use a Taser gun on a demonstrator during a protest against corruption and the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Cabral, which got near the stage where visiting Pope Francis I was wrapping up a massive ceremony with hundreds of thousands of young Catholics at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, on Friday. Tasso Marcelo/AFP RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Pope Francis I took his mission to re-energize his flock to legions of young Catholics on a Brazilian beach Friday, reaching out those who have lost faith due to church failings. The Argentine pontiff was greeted by hundreds of thousands of people on Copacabana beach for a second straight night of religious ceremonies marking World Youth Day, a week-long gathering of young Catholics.Latin America’s first pope sat in front of a giant cross on a grandiose white stage during a somber re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross – scenes of a bloodied Jesus heading to his crucifixion. He used his pulpit to make a political message in a country that was rocked last month by massive protests against corruption, lagging public services and the cost of hosting next year’s World Cup.“On the cross, Jesus is united with so many young people who have lost faith in political institutions, because they see in them only selfishness and corruption,” the pope said.“He unites himself with those young people who have lost faith in the Church, or even in God because of the incoherence of Christians and ministers of the Gospel,” the 76-year-old said. The pope, who was elected in March to reform the Church, was making a veiled reference to the pedophilia and financial scandals that have rocked the Vatican in recent years.Vatican officials have made no secret of the fact that the pope’s first trip abroad since his election aims to re-energize followers. Brazil remains the world’s biggest Catholic country, but the flock has shrunk while Evangelicals gain ground.“The cross of Christ bears the suffering and the sin of mankind, including our own. Jesus accepts all this with open arms, bearing on his shoulders our crosses and saying to us: ‘Have courage,’” Pope Francis said.As the ceremony wrapped up, some 200 protesters angry at Rio state Governor Sergio Cabral marched to within meters of the stage. At the same time, in São Paulo, 300 protesters ransacked several banks in a show of support.Earlier, adoring crowds cheered wildly as an open-top “Popemobile” took Francis along the crescent-shaped beach better known for skimpy bikinis and caipirinha cocktails than Bibles and religious ceremonies.“Pope Francis has a direct way of saying things and young people connect with that,” said Soledad Bohle, a 21-year-old student from Argentina. Before the beach ceremony, the pope met convicts, heard five young believers confess their sins and had lunch with a dozen others. “I told him that he should visit my country because we need him. He told me that Venezuelans have no sins,” said Estefani Lescano, a 21-year-old Venezuelan student who confessed to the pope in a Rio park. After his meeting with convicts, the Argentine pontiff emerged on a the balcony of a church-owned palace to address the crowd, urging them to cherish the elderly on Grandparents Day.“How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society,” he said.Rio authorities, meanwhile, have been scrambling to ensure his visit goes more smoothly after several logistical headaches this week.Rain has poured on the tropical city since the second day of the visit, soaking a field outside the city that was supposed to host hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and the pope for a weekend vigil and mass.A giant stage had been built in Guaratiba, but the area turned into a mud field, forcing authorities to move the events to Copacabana.Workers had toiled at the Guaratiba site, dubbed “field of faith,” since January. It was the latest embarrassment for local officials who are preparing for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. When the pope arrived on Monday, his small Fiat was forced to a standstill as adoring pilgrims swarmed the car.Visitors, meanwhile, have had to endure public transport headaches, with the metro breaking down for two hours on Tuesday.Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes took responsibility for the city’s logistical problems.“If you ask me to grade the organization of World Youth Day, I would say we are closer to zero than to 10,” Paes told CBN radio while quickly giving the pope and residents “a 10.”“I am aiming for perfection, but when I cannot achieve it, I don’t blame others and do not shirk my responsibility. Blame it on me, but don’t destroy the image of our city,” he said. Facebook Commentscenter_img No related posts.last_img read more

Cyprus got no request from US to investigate Trump advisors

first_imgUS authorities have not requested Cyprus’s assistance in investigating allegations concerning financial transactions in Cyprus by advisers of US president Donald Trump, including Paul Manafort, a Cypriot official said. The US “expressed no concern over what is going on in Cyprus” regarding possible wrongdoings by advisers, including possible money laundering, during a recent visit by Central Bank of Cyprus’s executive director George Syrichas to Washington, the official said. Nor have contacts with the US embassy in Nicosia raised any concerns.“US authorities including the Financial Crime Enforcement Network (FinCEN) were informed about Cyprus’s concerns (caused by media coverage in the US) and it looks like that FinCEN is not carrying out any investigation,” said the official who was talking to reporters on condition of anonymity. Cypriot authorities were dismayed by the negative publicity Cyprus has attracted in the context of “an internal political dispute” in the US.“We feel unfairly treated,” he said, in reference to reports in the foreign media presenting Cyprus as a money laundering hub, a reputation the island hotly disputes especially since implementing tough anti-money laundering measures since the 2013 banking crisis.Euro area members declined Cyprus’s request for a bailout of its banking sector in 2013 citing inter alia reports linking Cyprus to the laundering of Russian funds on the island. Following the crisis, which resulted into losses for depositors of the two major Cypriot banks, Cyprus took additional measures to enforce the implementation of anti-money laundering regulations, as provided by the terms of its bailout.A recent report by anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International showed that Cyprus disclosed the most complete set of anti-money laundering data among 12 analysed countries, “with information available for 14 out of the 20 indicators”.“Since 2013, huge steps have been made to an extent that we have been accused of being overly strict,” the source said.Manafort, who was forced to resign as Trump’s campaign manager last August after it emerged he had not disclosed lobby work he had done for Eastern European oligarchs, did have accounts at the Cyprus Popular Bank, widely known as Laiki, which the lender closed in 2011 after it requested documents which the customer did not provide, the official said.US and international media investigating Russia’s alleged meddling in the recent US presidential elections, reported in recent weeks that companies linked to Manafort had carried out suspicious transactions in Cyprus. Reports also linked former Bank of Cyprus vice-chairman Wilbur Ross, whom Trump appointed secretary of commerce, to Russian oligarchs with a stake in the Cypriot bank. You May LikeFigLeaf Beta AppGet Maximum Privacy with Minimum EffortFigLeaf Beta AppUndoTruthFinder People Search SubscriptionOne Thing All Liars Have in Common, Brace YourselfTruthFinder People Search SubscriptionUndoTotal Battle – Online Strategy GameIf You’re PC User This Strategy Game Is A Must-Have!Total Battle – Online Strategy GameUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoTurkish Cypriot actions in Varosha ‘a clear violation’ of UN resolutions, Nicosia saysUndoTwo arrested in connection with attempted murderUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more
